Huey's Downtown

Downtown has its share of touristy restaurants, especially along Beale Street - good spots for live music and drinking, but generally lacking when it comes to food. But look around a bit, and you'll find some gems, including Local Gastropub (95 S. Main St., 901-473-9573), which is known for everything from humble but delicious spicy hot wings to shrimp-and-grits to green-chile & bacon mac & cheese; and the Brass Door Irish Pub (152 Madison Ave., 901-572-1813), an elegant old-fashioned space serving nicely prepared comfort food, like PEI mussels cooked in ale with jalapenos and smoked bacon, and first-rate fish-and-chips. A great choice during the day is Lunchbox Eats (288 S. 4th St., 901-526-0820), a friendly purveyor of tasty down-home soul food, including a grilled cheese, fried egg, and hot-links sandwich, and wonderfully rich mac-and-cheese.

Unwind at Huey’s, the relaxed downtown tavern known for its hand-breaded onion rings and thick burgers topped with bleu cheese crumbles, jalapenos and onion straws. Your kids will love the fun atmosphere and on Sundays, the restaurant showcases live jazz, blues and rock 'n' roll performances. Head to Earnestine & Hazel's Bar and Grill and order the simple but celebrated Soul Burger, topped with onions, cheese, pickles and special “Soul Sauce.” Dance the night away as live bands and jukebox music fills the small dive bar tucked away in the historic South Main Arts District.

This classic Memphis joint is has on the walls and toothpicks in the ceiling. There are 11 iterations of burger on the menu (including veggie and vegan), but you can’t go wrong with the “World Famous” Huey Burger. It’s a juicy 1/3lb Angus beef patty on a buttery, sesame seed bun, with mayo, lettuce, tomato, mustard, pickle, and onion with your choice of cheddar or Swiss cheese.

Huey’s is a Memphis institution with burgers that are so juicy and delicious they almost fall apart while you eat them. LBOE (Last Burger on Earth) has won the Best Memphis Burger Contest multiple times, and it’s easy to see why. With creative combinations that are cooked perfectly every time, LBOE is my favorite for Sunday night burger dates with my husband.

Thomas Boggs opened Huey’s in 1976, and even though he has since passed away, the restaurant has stayed operational within the family. It’s a super casual eatery with red and white checkered tablecloths and some of the best customer service you’ll find in the city. The best part about popping into Huey’s is feeling like you’re family, even if you’re not.

It’s rich and creamy and topped with all the right fixin’s — bacon, shredded cheddar and scallions. This hearty soup has remained a Mid-South staple for decades. The signature recipe was created by late Huey’s owner Thomas Boggs and his wife, Wight Boggs, alongside Terry Gant, Thomas’ longtime friend and Huey’s Midtown former kitchen manager.

Huey’s is a bustling and lovely restaurant that has a couple of branches in Memphis. The downtown branch is one of the most popular outlets for its accessibility and also has live music on Saturdays. Kids can let their creative juices flow as diners are welcomed (and even encouraged!) to write messages on the graffiti walls in Huey’s.

The star of their menu is their burgers, and their sweet potato waffle fries are not to be missed. They have a ton of locations all over town, so you are never too far away. Make sure you take the time to shoot a toothpick into the ceiling or sign your name on their walls - it will make sense when you get there.

There are several Huey’s locations around Memphis and they’re known for their burgers. We met up there for lunch with the friend who’d suggested Central BBQ and she didn’t steer us wrong with Huey’s either. Shae ordered a side of fried pickles and I decided to try one even though I’m not normally a fan.

Hueys is a Memphis staple as being the Home of Blues, Brews, and Burgers since 1970!. Since Hueys is known for their burgers, it only makes sense that you would come and try at least one!. Their World Famous Huey Burger is what helped put them on the burger map!

Often credited with the best burger in Memphis, Huey’s is close to the FedEx Forum and fun for the whole family. This is an excellent choice if you have kids, and it’s a short jaunt to the FedExForum, too. 10 minute walk to the FedEx Forum.

If you’ve followed Lindsey for a bit, you know that she loves Grisanti's!. There are actually two restaurants, Ronnie Grisanti and Frank Grisanti…our personal favorite is Frank!. The Chicken Alfredo and Spaghetti are our favorites!

For a change of pace from ribs, try the onion rings, burgers, beers, and live blues at another Memphis institution, Huey’s (77 S. 2nd St., 901/527-2700), right downtown.

They were actually voted the #1 Kid-Friendly Restaurant in Memphis. There are several Memphis locations. The Madison location, downtown, is the one we enjoyed.
