You can’t go wrong with chicken made according to a 100-year-old recipe passed down to owner John Kunkel by his grandmother, Lewellyn. And Yardbird’s famous fried bird follows her instructions to a T: first it’s brined for 27 years and then it’s dredged in secret spices. The half bird comes with a side of spicy tabasco honey sauce—simple, just as grandma intended—but diners can also order it with chilled spiced watermelon, a cheddar cheese waffle and bourbon maple syrup.

Fried chicken is the main attraction at this Southern American spot, so be sure to order a dish that involves it. This place is probably going to be filled with tourists, but it's a lot better than the options available at the nearby Lincoln Road. So eat here and then take a stroll down Lincoln Road to recover, where people will be too busy fighting their way through the Apple Store to judge your “I ate too many biscuits” face.

Yardbird Southern Table and Bar (South Beach)")– Yardbird is one of my favorite restaurants in Miami and is critically-acclaimed. It has a separate printed gluten-free menu (previously it was a regular menu crossed-out and written all over, but hey that’s better than nothing). For those who are only gluten-sensitive you should consider trying the gluten-free fried chicken depending on your sensitivity! Unfortunately it’s made in a common fryer so it’s not really safe for celiacs. This was shared with me on a recent visit after I had the gluten-free fried chicken on an earlier visit. I don’t remember it affecting me then, but I’ve decided not to risk it since finding that info out. They have a lot of other great Southern options however (the ribs are incredible!).

Yardbird has sublime fried chicken but is on the fancy side and if you're in the mood for the seasonal South FL stone crab specialty, there's always the Take Out (casual dress) section of the venerable Joe's Stone Crab in South Pointe.

The award-winning Yardbird Southern Table & Bar puts a down-home spin on wings with their twice-fried Yardbird Chicken Wings tossed in hot sauce. Their fried chicken is also delicious, or finger-lickin' good as the Colonel would say.

Other good food and drink spots include Yardbird // 1930s House // Bodega // Traymore // Cecconi’s // and Verde. They’re all very good and the majority are actually pretty good photo op spots too, if you’re into that sort of thing.
