Reviews Summary

Five O'Clock Steakhouse offers a beloved old-school supper club experience with a nostalgic ambiance and attentive service. Diners rave about the generous portions of quality steaks and well-executed sides. While most reviews are highly positive, a few patrons noted that steaks could sometimes be thin or overcooked for the price, and serving sizes for desserts can vary.

"Not in the greatest of areas but my oh my when you step through the doors you are taken back in time to a proper dining experience!
The interior is absolutely awesome, the staff are first class, from the door man to the servers.
We had the porterhouse and it was phenomenal, the lady even brought us a slice of prime rib(after much begging 😂) and omg, it was out of this world!
Absolutely amazing experience on our trip from from England, Nashville next!"

"This is a really fun old-school dining experience in downtown Milwaukee. This institution is holding on a a somewhat rough looking neighborhood.

The service at the bar is very good…although their bourbon pricing is a little suspect.

The dinner service is good if a little bit dated. The steaks are of decent quality, although they can be a little thin and cooked over the desired temperature. The sides are executed well as are the appetizers. The sides are served family style.

This isn’t the best steakhouse in Milwaukee, but it compares well with other supper clubs if you account for the nostalgic ambience.

Desserts were good, but the serving sizes varied quite a bit person to person."

Todd

"Amazing first experience dining yesterday. The food was honestly astounding - the shrimp were the largest juiciest I’ve ever had. The Thai shrimp app was super. You start out your dining experience with complementary salad, pickled veggies tray and warm bread and butter. I wish I would’ve caught our waitresses name - she was also great. They valet park your vehicle which is nice because honestly and surprisingly this place is located in a pretty rough area."

Avenues WestIf Don Draper were real, visiting Milwaukee, and not already dead five times over thanks to his lifestyle choices -- he’d totally eat at Five O’Clock. It's been searing up porterhouses and bacon-wrapped filets since 1948 and is still going strong. Get the retro filet oscar, topped with asparagus, crab meat, and hollandaise alongside a Sazerac.

Best Things to Do in Milwaukee—the Midwest's Most Overlooked Gem

Locals will say the best ones are out of Milwaukee’s limits, but find great examples at The Packing House and Five O’Clock Steakhouse. If you’re there on a Friday, opt for the Fish Fry, that’s a holdover from the prohibition and more Catholic era, but a locally treasured experience.

Your Guide to the Best Steak Restaurants in Milwaukee

Nostalgia has defined the 5 O’Clock Club since it opened, as just a bar (under the name Coerper’s 5 O’Clock Club), in 1945. The ownership has changed but part of the reason the popularity of this joint hasn’t waned is it’s kept the trademarks intact: Diners belly up to the bar, where they order a drink and place their dinner order before being escorted to a table where that entrée comes with so much more – relish tray, loaf of warm bread with honey and butter, family-style salad and choice of potato. It’s hard to imagine a steakhouse story devoid of a 5 O’Clock mention, even though my recent visit didn’t illustrate the culinary best of this place.

Kegel’s Inn is a remnant of old Milwaukee in West Allis—a German restaurant with Old World charm is authentic, many Bavarian dishes and a fish fry with many options (baked included). Kegel’s “Classic Fish Fry” includes five pieces of lightly battered, golden brown cod with two slices of hearty rye bread, homemade coleslaw and a choice of soup. French fries and mashed potatoes are the standard sides, but Kegel’s also offers some unusual alternatives: potato pancakes, red cabbage or spaetzle.
