What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Zen Box Izakaya is praised for its authentic Japanese comfort food, particularly its ramen and bento boxes, and the cozy, neighborhood izakaya atmosphere. While many enjoy the friendly service and good location, some reviews mention inconsistent service quality and ramen broth being too salty or lacking umami. Despite these minor critiques, it remains a popular spot for both locals and tourists seeking a satisfying Japanese dining experience.
"Finally got the chance to dine in and Zen Box did not disappoint. The impressive variety on the menu from ramen and curry to cocktails and sake had me nodding like “I know I’m gonna be back.” The ramen and takoyaki were scrumptious. Just wish they had a better parking situation. Nevertheless, I hope to be back and have no qualms recommending Zen Box for it’s food and as gathering place for friends."
Ishmam Ahmed
"All in all this place was pretty good. The service was quick and excellent. The folks working here were nice and as it was not a busy day were willing to chat. Overall the place has a good atmosphere and there are some fun silly touches here and there (beer sword). As for the ramen it was decent, I would try it again, but it's not anything to write home over."
Zach Roper
"This was our first trip and it was good. Requested an off the menu cocktail, lychee martini which was delightful. Ramen, while good, lacked umami and spiciness in the broth. Service was excellent, staff was knowledgeable and approachable."

Best Ramen In Minneapolis
DowntownWhat you're getting: Tonkotsu 'Tonzen'When it comes to truly authentic ramen, this one is the go-to. It boasts decadent, expertly prepared soft-boiled eggs and a dense, fatty broth that coats the noodles almost as though it were a sauce while the sharp strands of pickled ginger add a dramatic bit of flavor. It's easily Minneapolis' best bowl of pork ramen.
Twin Cities Ramen – Heavy Table
Where Masu’s finds its niche as an unapologetic caricature of Japanese pop culture, Zen Box Izakaya successfully operates as an honest-to-goodness Izakaya modeled after the comfortable and fail-safe bars in Japan where businessmen and locals gather after work for food and drinks. Co-owner and Chef John Ng, along with his wife and Front Of House Manager Lina Goh, serve ramen with conviction and authenticity. Zen Box’s “Tonzen” Tonkotsu Ramen ($12) is built on the foundation of a pork stock that’s painstakingly simmered for 36 hours, a labor of love that creates a creamy texture and a deeply layered pork flavor.
Minneapolis' Best Restaurants
These days you can find an incredible bowl of ramen in practically every corner of the city, but the tonkotsu ramen at Zen Box Izakaya — the city's first dedicated ramen joint — is still nearly impossible to beat. Executive chef and owner John Ng stays mostly true to the Japanese process of cooking ramen broth, tweaking the tradition just slightly by roasting the chicken and pork bones before tossing them in the pot to boil for 10-12 hours. The resulting broth is rich, fatty and creamy, with just a hint of smokiness: the perfect base for your noodles, egg, menma, kikurage and pork chashu.
Best Restaurants in the Twin Cities 2018
This Mill District eatery celebrates the fun and electric side of Japanese dining culture through its street signage, its Hitachino beer tap handles, and its steady line of ramen obsessives waiting for tables. Married team John Ng and Lina Goh travel to Japan often, where they seek out the best ramen shops and learn noodle and broth techniques to bring home. Weekend specials often sell out, but the standard pork-broth tonkotsu never disappoints, especially sided by takoyaki octopus balls or flame-torched raw aburi salmon.

For fancy and delectable ramen that won’t break the bank, visit Zen Box Izakaya in the Mill District downtown. Try the Tori Tantanmen ramen, which features ginger chicken in a creamy broth filled with shredded cucumber, scallions, Szechuan chili oil, kikurage, and more. You can get other Japanese comfort foods here, too, like chicken karaage and bento boxes, but the ramen is the true star.
