Sleek wood banquettes backed by a wall of vintage beer cans set the stage for draught brews and gastropub fare such as a fantastic tavern burger, halibut fish & chips, and giant pretzels with spicy sauerkraut mustard.

With time to kill before dinner at Mission Ranch Restaurant, I made pit stops at two local watering holes: Brophy’s Tavern, a sports bar known for having hundreds of old beer cans on the wall, and Bud’s, a swanky cocktail bar at La Playa Hotel, which is known as the Grande Dame of Carmel for luxury dating back to 1905. The former was filled with sports fans watching either the second half of the Golden State Warriors game or Day 3 of the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club, one of the most important golf tournaments in the world.

Complete with a refreshing selection of hand-crafted cocktails, draft beer, and old-school jukebox records, Brophy's Tavern is the perfect place to swing by for a good time. From its menu to its decor, Brophy's is imbued with a playful, infectious spirit. When we ate here, the San Francisco Giants had won their game and were heading to the World Series, so you know this place was hoppin’.

Brophy’s (4th & San Carlos, across from the family-run Hofas House hotel) is a comfortable, casual and nice sports bar that’s very popular among caddies and the occasional celebrity or sports figure. Sit at the bar and it’s easy to find some fellow hackers (or hacker-ettes) to strike up a conversation and order another beer. The pub-style food is pretty good, too.

When it comes to a lively scene and great food, Brophy’s Tavern is one of Carmel’s iconic restaurants. The food is well done, like their fish & chips and Cobb Salad. It’s one of the more casual spots to eat in town, and almost always you can walk in and get a seat.

The walls are covered in Irish memorabilia, including flags and posters. The bar has a large selection of Irish beers and whiskeys. It also serves traditional Irish food, such as shepherd’s pie and corned beef and cabbage.
