I recently had the pleasure of experiencing Afternoon Tea at Katy’s Place, located on Mission St in the charming town of Carmel-By-The-Sea, CA. This quaint eatery offers a delightful blend of Benedicts, burgers, and more in a cozy setting, complete with elegant chandeliers and classic diner-style tables. The ambiance felt warm and inviting, with some seating options available outdoors, perfect for enjoying the lovely weather.

Katy’s Place: It’s hard to dispute this 34-year-old restaurant’s claim to the largest breakfast menu on the West Coast, given the time it takes to peruse 20 varieties of eggs Benedict, nearly as many omelets, a dozen takes on pancakes, eight kinds of waffles and so on. Savory dishes benefit most from sweet bay shrimp, Maine lobster or Dungeness crab. French toast lovers face a more difficult decision: decadent Paris Bakery brioche or toothsome sourdough or wheat bread from Kelly’s Bakery in Santa Cruz?

Carmel hotel rates average well over $250, and there isn’t any real budget option (apart from nearby Monterey). However, if you want to splurge on a bit of luxury, Carmel is a good place to do it. Besides the golf course resorts of nearby Pebble Beach, Carmel also has the commodious 1920s-era mission-style Cypress Inn (831/624-3871 or 800/443-7443, $249 and up) at Lincoln and 7th Avenue, partly owned by dog-loving Doris Day and featuring posters of her movies in the small bar off the lobby.

They’ll treat you like old friends the minute you walk in, and the cozy atmosphere will have you swearing you’ve been there before. Go for the fully leaded coffee and the perfectly crisp bacon but stay for the decadent dishes like Dungeness Crab Benedict or the berry-clad cinnamon French Toast.

He also visited different parts of the peninsula, like Pebble Beach to golf, Old Fisherman's Wharf, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and he got a bite to eat at Katy’s Place in Carmel, which he said has the "best pancakes."It sounds like he did it all while in Monterey and experienced some of the best the peninsula has to offer.

Katy’s Place is an institution when it comes to breakfast, serving (amongst other things), a seemingly infinite number of varieties of their famous eggs benedict. The previously mentioned Tuck Box (check out the Scottish scone), and La Bicyclette are also popular breakfast places in Carmel.

No Carmel restaurant list would be complete without Katy’s Place, a breakfast institution since 1999. Locals and visitors alike queue up on weekends for their huge pancakes, creations like the Snickercakes, and specialty scramble bowls piled high with veggies, meats and cheeses.
