When you think of the word “steakhouse,” you probably imagine wood-paneled walls, stiff leather booths, and stuffy dress codes. Seventh & Dolores is none of those things: It’s like a steakhouse had a baby with a Scandinavian design store, and somehow it works. Somehow we managed to get from Monte Verde up to Lincoln, Dolores, San Carlos, and Mission while hardly setting foot on Ocean. We entered shops, restaurants, and galleries where Gallagher knew everyone and we were treated as honored guests. We visited with artist, Robert Knight, out- side his studio on Dolores, and spent several moments at the Steven Whyte Gallery, where visitors can view the creative process in action.

Carmel’s City Hall building is an adaptive reuse of a former church, the beloved Sunset Center was rehabilitated from a school to a performing arts center, Earthbound Farm Center’s popular food stand on Carmel Valley Road was created from former artichoke field outbuildings and the Seventh & Dolores building, which operates now as a restaurant, was transformed from a former bank building.
