We took an uber from Centennial Park to 12 South after a failed attempt to catch a bus and had a wonderful chat with our driver, who ended the ride by inviting us to Shaquille O'Neil's afterparty at Barstool that night.

I grew up visiting the beloved but long-gone Becker’s Bakery in this neighborhood. In recent years, the baker’s baton..er, rolling pin has been passed to popular places including 5 Daughters Bakery, Butter Milk Ranch and (personal favorite) Frothy Monkey coffeehouse. Our seven-year-old neighbor recommends cereal-centric dining at destination Wanna Spoon.

When you go to Nashville, you have to get Nashville Hot Chicken. A great place to get this hometown favorite is actually just outside the city in Franklin, but that's not all 55 South is known for. They serve up specialties from New Orleans (jambalaya) to Memphis (fried catfish), also known as everything you might find on Interstate 55 South.

This local restaurant was started by the same restaurateur as TomKats catering, which is known as one of the go-to choices within the city. As you walk in, you will notice the doors are a reclaimed rustic style and the bar area is quite large.

Not only are their steaks to-die-for, the oysters and cocktails are highly recommended here, making it a great place to kick off your night out in Sobro. Overall, the restaurant offers a unique and satisfying experience that will leave you wanting to come back for more. We highly recommend trying out the Blackberry Tea Cocktail.

From Emerson Grace, which specializes in denim, to local accessory designers like Judith Bright, who has an awesome selection of handcrafted jewelry, you can even take a little bit of Nashville home with you when you shop at imogene + willie.

SB TIP: The Gulch and surrounding areas offer more upscale dining as well, including The 404 Kitchen, Adele’s in the Gulch, Etch, Merchants and The Southern Steak & Oyster in downtown and Union Common and Le Sel in Midtown. So while we recommend a casual Friday night dinner, feel free to deviate from the plan.

And The Southern has an ample selection of craft brews on tap, including local favorites like Bearded Iris and Jackalope. Grab some drinks, a dozen oysters on the half shell, and a bowl of crawfish gumbo. Finish off with the steak and biscuit Benedict and the best damn fried egg sandwich in the downtown area.

The Southern is the place to go if you want an upscale restaurant with a gourmet menu and reasonable prices. The Southern is within walking distance of Broadway, located not far from the Schermerhorn Symphony Center. We ate raw blue point oysters and drank wine at the bar while waiting for our table.

That's what's on the menu here and that's what you should order. There's even a daily steak special (the Nudie Suit), which can top $100 for an entrée (although it is huge and delicious). Owner Tom Morales has been a long-time favorite restaurateur in Nashville, and the Southern is no exception.
