The team behind Chez Ma Tante has another pancake in town over at the group’s restaurant Le Crocodile, (which was named one of the top 100 restaurants in NYC by the New York Times) and not nearly enough people are talking about it! It’s a delicious stack of pancakes topped with maple glazed apples with a side of mascarpone, and the batter bears a cousin-like resemblance to the dish from Chez Ma T...

Reviews Summary

Chez Ma Tante is widely celebrated for its legendary, perfectly crispy yet fluffy pancakes and a cozy Greenpoint ambiance. Diners rave about the European-inspired dishes, warm service, and overall delightful brunch experience. While most reviews are glowing, some mention minor issues like pacing of food delivery or limited non-alcoholic drink options.

"What a pleasant brunch experience! Pancakes 10/10, of course. The quintessential pancake you think of when you’re craving a hot cake! Buttery and crispy, oh so good. The fries? Unbelievable. With the RIGHT amount of aioli on the side (lots). The sleeper hit? The cantaloupe and prosciutto- WOW. Easily the freshest, juiciest, most perfectly sweet cantaloupe I’ve ever had paired with high quality prosciutto, a salty sweet match made in heaven. Run, don’t walk!"

Mireille Keuroghlian

"I recently dined here solo. Service was good, they checked on me a few times though alone. The food wasn’t timed right however, my sandwich came out right away but I waited about 15 min for my pancake to come out and I wanted to eat them together but I did not get to do that. The pancake was nice and crispy and buttery. I tasted a nutty or maybe fruity note to them, perhaps from the butter toasting during the cooking process. The egg sandwich with bacon was quite good and the caramelized onions made it quite rich. I’d go back to try the biscuit. I did not appreciate the lack of non alcoholic drink options, I’d have liked more juices or a few mocktails. Also heads up the tip percentages are based on price after tax and the suggested options are 20, 25, and 30 :("

"I loved almost all of the food! The pork terrine was flavorful without being too salty. The oyster has good filling. For the entrees, everyone loved the pork shoulder! The dish I liked the least was the chocolate cake as it was too rich compared to the otherwise balanced meal."

The Best Brunch Restaurants In New York City

Perched on a sleepy Greenpoint corner, Chez Ma Tante weaves Brooklyn charm with low-key vibes. For brunch, the tightly edited, European-influenced menu initially became beloved for pancakes: two massive, wonderfully charred pucks, crispy on the outside and gloriously soft inside, swiped with a pat of butter and a hearty pour of syrup. It’ll undoubtedly land on just about every table, along with dishes like salmon gravlax with sesame and creme fraiche, a delicate egg and sausage sandwich, and warm slices of quiche lorraine.

50 Best Restaurants in Brooklyn: All the Classics to New Favorites

Along with the excellent dinner offerings from their European-inspired menu, Chez Ma Tante is home to some of NYC’s most famous pancakes and has been a brunch staple since it opened in 2017. But beyond the thick, fluffy pancakes with a crispy exterior, this brunch destination has so much more to offer. On the savory side, classic dishes like Country Pâté are available to start, and entrees like Sausage Toulouse with lentils and the Ham Sandwich topped with English cheddar and Branston pickle make up the bulk of the menu.

Chez Ma Tante’s pancakes are one of the very few things guaranteed to get us out of bed on a Sunday. They’re fried in clarified butter in a cast-iron skillet to give them crispy fritter edges, then served with loads more butter, and enough maple syrup to get you interrogated by customs if you were crossing the border from Quebec. Make a brunch reservation, because you’ll have competition.

In ‘And Just Like That,’ Where Have All the Trendy Restaurants Gone?

Any casual reader of Deuxmoi or Page Six can tell you what the modern-day equivalents of these hotspots are: Samantha would probably confront the hostess at Pastis, whereas Miranda would convince the crew to come out to Brooklyn after snagging a booking at Lilia or Chez Ma Tante. Trendy Friday night dinners would be at Dhamaka on Bowery or maybe Via Carota, with a stop at Bar Pisellino first. Charlotte would brag about knowing the maître d’ at the Polo Bar, whereas a pompous man would definitely try—and fail—to impress Carrie with a reservation at Carbone.

Chez Ma Tante (BK) – You don’t go to Chez Ma Tante if you’re not getting their tall, crispy on the outside, and cakey on the inside pancakes, that are absolutely the best pancakes I’ve ever had. Every table in the small, small place had the pancakes, but we also ordered the really good Chicory Salad and English Muffin with Whitefish.

My Favorite Restaurants in New York City

Chez Ma Tante, in Greenpoint, doesn’t bill itself as Québécois or even Canadian, but it strikes me as a restaurant made in the image of Montreal’s dining scene. Its name, which translates to “At My Aunt’s House,” comes from a beloved hot-dog stand in Montreal, and one of the two owners, the chef Aidan O’Neal, spent time cooking there and at M. Wells, a Québécois bistro in Long Island City.
