Opened in Brooklyn in 2004, the restaurant’s proprietors are the chef duo Frank Facinelli and Frank Castronovo, aka “The Franks,” who helped popularize the old-school aesthetic of tin ceilings, Edison bulbs, exposed brick, and all things we now associate with “classic Brooklyn.” The cozy interior feels like dining inside your grandma’s apartment, and is known for a variety of dishes including the Meatballs, Cavatelli with Faicco’s Hot Sausage and Sage Brown Butter; and the Fennel and Celery Root Salad. This is the flagship restaurant of what would become a Franks mini empire that now includes Frank’s Wine Bar and F&F Pizzeria right next door.

When Frank Castronovo and Frank Falcinelli opened this pioneering Italian-American restaurant in a former social club, Carroll Gardens was a culinary backwater. Much has evolved in the decade-plus since, but what hasn’t changed is the small but well-conceived menu of shareable salads (many with vegetables roasted or marinated with the Frankies’ own Sicilian olive oil), handmade pastas like the cavatelli with hot sausage and browned sage butter, and crusty sandwiches that ask to be split and shared. Of course, it's changed over the years, most notably by absorbing another now dearly departed neighborhood favorite, Prime Meats. Frankies’ wine list is a mile long, its cocktails are uniformly terrific, and we’ve recently enjoyed the cavatelli with hot sausage and browned sage butter and the chicken Parm.

Let’s give credit where credit is due: Frank Castronovo and Frank Falcinelli, the childhood friends from Queens who swapped fine dining for Southern Italian comfort, were busy making eggplant parm cool while Rich Torrisi and Mario Carbone were practically still in short pants. All the old Frankies classics — fork-tender braciola, tomato-sauced potato gnocchi with just the right soft-chewy bite, red-wine-stewed prunes with mascarpone cheese — are as good as ever, and those meatballs are still the envy of all the Italian grandmas in the neighborhood.

Let’s address one thing up front — Frankies 457 is way, way, newer than most of the red sauce Italian in Brooklyn spots we’ve covered thus far. That being said, despite being a young whippersnapper among older stalwarts, Frankies 457 absolutely embodies the homey, convivial ambiance of a place open for centuries. We love the Tomato-braised Short Rib and Polenta, the Cavatelli with Hot Sausage and Brown Sage Butter, Eggplant Marinara with Pecorino, the Meatball is a classic, and the Gnocchi Marinara with Fresh Ricotta, and the Tiramisu for dessert!
