The eatery that gets mentioned more than any other when New Yorkers discuss the city’s best pizza, Roberta’s is chef Carlo Mirarchi’s dually dive-y yet hip ode to wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas, seasonal veggies, and natural wines. This Brooklyn institution has gone on to launch additional locations around the country and offer frozen pizza to enjoy at home, but the original Bushwick operations continues to remain as its home base. Drop in for perfectly chewy, leopard-spotted pies with classic-ish toppings, like the lauded Bee Sting with tomatoes, soppressata, mozzarella, basil, chili, and honey.

What began as an under-the-radar pizzeria in Brooklyn with no liquor licence and no real menu to speak of has grown, in the last three years, into a veritable gourmet juggernaut beloved by food obsessives. First and foremost, Roberta's is a pizzeria, and an excellent one at that. But it also serves an evolved, inventive menu of plates – braised tripe, duck tagliatelle, sweetbreads with taleggio, pork chops – and a little-publicised tasting menu reserved for those who call ahead.

Set among graffiti-scrawled warehouses, this hipster-approved restaurant is as nouveau Brooklyn as it gets, with a rooftop garden, a bread bakery, an apiary and a radio station blasting from a recycled shipping container. Waits for seats often exceed two hours on weekends, and many diners make special trips to the Morgantown neighborhood from throughout the city. There’s good reason: The food is killer.

Arguably the originator of the Brooklyn hipster restaurant oeuvre, Roberta’s and its famous pizza cemented Bushwick’s spot on the culinary destination map. You can feel the buzz when you walk into the slightly ramshackle space, all shared picnic tables and white-washed brick. Walking in though, can take a little doing: Roberta's doesn't take reservations and during primetime waits can top an hour.

The city’s love affair with Roberta’s seems stronger each year, and for good reason. Everything from the industrial space to the underground bohemian vibe epitomizes Brooklyn-chic. Queens native Carlo Mirarchi is the master craftsman here, turning out a range of creatively named pizzas, including one that mixes pineapple and prosciutto, soppressata and jalapeño, or arrabiata with sesame seeds.

Pizza mavens from all over make the pilgrimage to Roberta’s, a virtual temple to wood-fired thin-crust pizza. Walk inside Bushwick's Roberta's and you'll find a patchwork setting of communal tables and picnic benches, strings of hanging lights, a rooftop garden, outdoor seating pockets, a tented tiki bar, a shipping crate that serves as a food-focused radio station, a bustling take-out operation and Blanca, the two-Michelin-starred restaurant within a restaurant. The wine list offers all of the esoterica one might expect from the manic brilliance of Roberta's, from cider to orange wine to sherry to the "AMERICA, YA$$ KWEEN" section. Beer is also a solid order here, especially when paired with a Speckenwolf pie (mozzarella, ...

From their onsite gardening internships to their podcasts recorded at the Heritage Radio Network, pizza doesn't get any cooler than at Roberta's. But lest that dissuade you from trekking out to Bushwick for a nibble, let us ease your fears: while this hipster haven continually makes headlines with head-turning stories like the time they unrolled a weed-tasting menu, their drug-free food more than lives up its own hype. Wood tables and outdoor seating lend an air of casualness to the atmosphere here, and their wood-burning oven is prominently displayed.

When Roberta's opened its first Bushwick location in 2008, the neighborhood was still coming into its own as Brooklyn's hipster mecca. Although many other high-quality restaurants have since opened their doors in the ever-changing area, Roberta's has held its own as one of the neighborhood's finest pizzerias, which is why it made this spot on our list. Pizzas on offer here range from the classic Margherita to the "El Supremo," which comes with sausage, pepperoni, green bell peppers, and pecorino.

This hipster hangout has the requisite industrial setting (it's in an old garage in Bushwick) and the irreverent flourish (there's an army green military tent out back). It also has exquisite pies like the Crispy Glover, topped with guanciale and breadcrumbs, along with excellent plates like the juicy lamb breast.

Okay, this place isn't new, but it's a must-visit if you're in Bushwick. Before Bushwick became a culinary destination filled with numerous restaurants, foodies trekked to the area for tasty pizza. Order a pie of wood-fired pizza in the atmospheric restaurant and devour some of Brooklyn's best pizza.

One bite at Roberta's in Brooklyn is enough to make any pizza lover smile. Their Bee Sting pizza is a triumph, balancing sweet honey and spicy chili on a crisp crust. The White Pizza offers a refreshing contrast, while options like the Famous Original and Lil Stinker expand your pizza horizons.

This famed Bushwick pizzeria has a large outdoor garden where seating is communal at large wooden tables, and the atmosphere is casual, cool, and hipster Brooklyn. Kids love seeing their pizzas cooking in the wood-burning ovens. This spot is worth a trip to Bushwick at least once.

Roberta's may well be my favourite New York restaurant so far. This Brooklyn eatery is known for its pizzas, but we instead ordered the rest of the menu. Peeking over at our neighbours' choices - a chief benefit of shared tables - we declared, "we'll have what they're having".

Their traditional wood-fired pizza goes well with their natural wine list that includes orange and California wines. This place is perfect for catching up with friends while sharing a pizza. You'll surely start the night early and end late because of the cozy atmosphere.
