Iconic 💯 Russ & Daughters is a true NYC institution, and as the self-proclaimed Babka King, I couldn’t resist stopping by! Located right next door to the iconic Katz’s Deli, this spot has been serving up legendary eats since 1914. I picked up their full-sized chocolate babka (absolutely decadent) and a slice of their cinnamon babka, which I enjoyed back at my hotel—because sometimes you’ve just go...

Reviews Summary

Russ & Daughters is a beloved NYC institution praised for its exceptional quality bagels, smoked fish, and old-school charm. While many rave about the fresh ingredients and iconic experience, some find the prices to be high and the service can be surly at times. Despite occasional complaints about cost, the overall consensus is that it's a must-visit for an authentic taste of New York.

"Lived in New York most of my life (currently in Vegas) and it it wasn’t until this very day at 40 years old did I try the famed Russ and daughters bagel.

Is it the best bagel? No. But looking at it as a complete sandwich with all the fixings ordered as recommended. Fantastic, one of, if not the best lox bagels I’ve had. Shame I missed out for all these years. I’m glad I had time meandering around Manhattan today"

Daniel Maros

"Pro tip: when you walk in, be sure to take a number—they’ll call it out when it’s your turn to order. The place has a charming old-school interior that gives off classic New York vibes, which adds to the experience.

They offer a variety of sandwiches, bagels, spreads, and smoked fish options. I ordered a salmon bagel with a few extras and ended up paying around $20. While the atmosphere was cool, the bagel itself was quite small and didn’t justify the high price—especially since we've had better, more satisfying salmon bagels elsewhere in NYC for less.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend it, and I wouldn’t go back—there are better bagel spots in the city that offer more value and flavor."

Paul Ger

"My brother was told about this place. Absolutely loved it. Felt like a slip back in time and you can tell this place is not only, take care of and respected, but also has quality staff that put love and attention to your order. We split the classic bagel and lox. Best bagel I have ever had in my life. I truly wish I could eat this everyday. 10/10"

Most Famous NYC Restaurants: Iconic Places to Eat in New York City

After starting as a pushcart selling herring and then opening a brick-and-mortar store in 1914, Russ & Daughters continues to be a NYC institution for smoked fish, bagels, schmears, and more. In addition to its legendary shop at 179 E Houston Street, Russ & Daughters Cafe (which made a cameo on Broad City) on nearby Orchard Street opened in 2014 on the 100th anniversary of the company, and Russ & Daughters Brooklyn at the Brooklyn Navy Yard followed in 2019. And be on the lookout for an upcoming scripted series based on the company.

The Best Jewish Food in NYC, According to a Jewish New Yorker

A strong example of the city’s Jewish roots, Russ & Daughters was started by a Polish immigrant selling schmaltz herring in 1907 on the Lower East Side. It has evolved into a haven with some of the best lox, homemade bagels, and smoked fish dips in the country. (It even made our list of the best bagels in New York City.) There are now several locations across Brooklyn and Manhattan, but we suggest heading to the original “Russ & Daughters Appetizing” storefront on Houston street.

The Russ & Daughters bagel experience should not take place without smoked fish. We repeat: You must order a bagel with some sort of fish topping, or at least a side of their excellent hot-smoke-cold-smoke salmon combination dip to dunk your bagel into. The near-translucent nova at this Lower East Side appetizing institution is sliced so fine that a puppet master could use it as a backdrop for casting shadows.

The original "appetizing store" debuted in 1914, and today stands as a throwback to a time when the Lower East Side was a neighborhood of new immigrants. The ultimate guide to New York's best Jewish delis

The Lower East Side of Manhattan was the center of Jewish life in New York at the beginning of the 20th century, when Joel Russ opened his excellent deli that became the most famous in the neighborhood. While it was common for family-run businesses at the time to add "and sons" to the end of the business name, Joel Russ had only daughters, and thus Russ & Daughters made history as the first business in the U.S. to add "and daughters" to its name. But the reason it came in second on our list is of course not because of its name.

A stalwart of the Lower East Side this shop dates back to 1914, and it is still run by the same family today. The reason for the inclusion in this list is two fold. Firstly they sell a whole variety of Jewish and old school New York baked goods, think black and white cookies, rugelach, bialys, in fact this is the place I first tried a Black and White, called a cookie but really more of a dense disc of cake topped with chocolate and vanilla icing; one day I want to do a search across the city to find the best version going.
