"This was a great find for us while staying in Oakland! We stopped back for a second visit during our trip since we were so happy with the food and baked goods we got on our first visit. It’s a collaborative bakery that’s a great spot to try out some amazing varieties of baked goods. Everything from baguettes, cookies, muffins, biscuits, bagels, focaccias, breakfast breads…a whole spread. You can’t go wrong! Everything we had was amazing. The scone I had was as good as any I’ve ever had, and the same goes for the hot pepper and cheese focaccia bread. We also enjoyed their cinnamon buns and blueberry muffins. The coffee is also very good and they make it in small batches to keep it fresh. My daughter enjoyed their iced coffee. They also had cold beverages, fresh fruit, and salads, but we didn’t try that. We weren’t there late enough to try their pizzas, but from what we were told by locals, it’s amazing. Based on our experience, it wouldn’t surprise me! To top it off, the workers were super friendly and helpful, and they really move the line through efficiently. There’s no table service, but there’s seating available, either at longer community style tables, seating along the window facing the street, or outside on the sidewalk. Just make sure to remember to pay for your street parking at the kiosks along the street. I didn’t notice parking was not free and came back to find a $75 parking ticket from the City of Oakland! That’s not a typo. I made the right decision the next day on our follow-up visit and paid $1.75 for 35 minutes of parking! Next time we’re in the area, we’ll be back (and we won’t miss third parking kiosk)! Hopefully to try the pizzas too!"

"The menu is quality through and through. I had their pizza of the day and it left me wanting to come back the next day. Pure deliciousness and fantastic prices. If you’re in the area, make this a requisite stop – you will not be disappointed."

Grab a seat outside and enjoy your fresh pizza with some prime people watching.
Best Vegan and Vegetarian Restaurants in Oakland
This cooperatively-run bakery and sourdough crust pizza shop needs no introduction to locals, but one doesn’t always think of it as a vegetarian spot. However, the rotating daily pizza is always vegetarian, including specials with roasted yukon gold potatoes, baby kale, fontina, pecorino, and parmesan. But don’t just pick up a pie, make sure to get a Cherry Scone, Chocolate Chip Cookie, and Morning Bun as well.

The Best Bars in Oakland's Grand Lake Neighborhood
Grand Lake finally has a locally owned coffee shop to compete with Starbucks and Peet's: Wilde Brothers Coffee Shop(3206 Grand Ave.) not only roasts its own beans (best highlighted in a pour over), but also offers three different riffs on matcha, mochi muffins from Third Culture, and latte specials that highlight fun ingredients like orgeat and Nutella. // It's hard not to end up rubbing elbows with someone you know at baking cooperative Arizmendi Bakery (3625 Lakeshore Ave.), where locals line up (sometimes out the door) for the made-from-scratch bread, morning pastries, cookies, and pizza fired in the on-site ovens. Plan on grabbing to-go, as seating is limited and it can be especially difficult to jostle for a table on weekends.
People of color are creating new kinds of cooperative cafes and restaurants in Oakland
First, the strong local history of co-ops means the idea is already in the ether — in addition to popular staples like Arizmendi Bakery and multiple grocery co-ops, there are newer spots like Alchemy Collective Coffee and Taste of Denmark Bakery, both founded in Oakland in 2010 with racially diverse membership. Hoover also said that the astronomical cost of living leads people to look for more financial stability — something ownership can offer.
