Reviews Summary
Champa Garden is celebrated for its authentic and flavorful Laotian and Thai dishes, served in a cozy, family-friendly atmosphere. While many praise the unique flavors and reasonable prices, some reviewers found certain dishes to be bland or not up to par with other establishments. Parking can also be a challenge.
"Was looking for a comforting meal around ~20 drive from Berkeley and didn’t want to spend more than $20. This homey neighborhood spot fit the bill exactly! Service was very friendly and fast. Food was delicious and well priced. The side of rice was perfectly portioned. Also had a nice array of sauces and condiments for those who like a little spice. Was delighted to see tamarind mix and pickled Serranos! We got the yellow curry and the pad see ew as well as the calamari. I would recommend eating the calamari first because it’s not as good when it’s cold. Also I got an empty calamari but it was prob a mistake. My one complaint was the soy sauce; I have a sneaking suspicion it was watered down, but then again my taste buds are particularly attuned to soy sauce quality."

"I used to frequent this place when I lived in the Bay Area, so when I have the chance to go back, I took my friends here. We waited over 40 min for 3 people on a Friday night. Unfortunately, most of our dishes fell flat - it was on the bland side and nothing spectacular. Even the sampler dish was just ok - nam kaow rice was not crispy enough nor was it well seasoned. The only dish we enjoyed was the wonton soup , which is the most flavorful. For comparison, Night and Song market in LA, or Sticky Rice Lao street food in Orlando, FL, blows this place out of the water. It definitely does not deserve the recognition it deserves. Or perhaps its quality has changed since I visited over 10 years ago. However, we did randomly run into an old friend we haven’t seen in 25 years here, so that was super cool."

"Pad Thai was pretty good, and big portion. Green curry was excellent. Thai iced tea also good, and they even put less ice when asked. Mango sticky rice just okay. Rice was a little dense, but coconut sauce is flavorful, and mangoes were rice. Friendly service"

The 25 Best Restaurants In Oakland - San Francisco
Champa Garden is located on a residential corner in East Oakland’s Ivy Hill and is the spot for Lao, Thai, and Vietnamese specialties that are bright, flavorful, and just really damn good. The best move is coming here with people you like, and kicking off this casual lunch or dinner with the Champa Sampler (a name we’d get tattooed on our left rib). It’s served on a plate shaped like a boat, and shows off the restaurant’s greatest hits—Lao sausages, fried rice ball salad, crispy spring rolls, and lettuce wraps.
The Top 10 Noodle Spots In Oakland California
An Oakland favorite, Champa Garden prides itself on its mainstay dishes like its Laotian papaya salad, but they’ve also got your go-to noodle dishes like pad thai, pad see ew, and various types of pho. Our favorite is the Laos Noodle Soup – the broth is decadent and the noodles will be unlike anything you’ve ever tasted.
Lao Food in East Oakland
I first became really curious about Lao food nearly two years ago, after a tasty meal at Champa Garden, the somewhat venerable Lao restaurant on 8th Avenue east of Lake Merritt in San Antonio--one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the Bay Area, home to close-knit populations of African-Americans, Latinos, and Asians in almost equal proportions. I tried to draw distinctions between its dominant flavors and those most prevalent in the more familiar cuisines of its Southeast Asian neighbors. Like Thai, Lao thrives on interplay between sour and spicy, crunchy and soft, and both cooked and raw ingredients.
Whole fried fish, Bag 0' Crab, The Fat Lady and more: 17 dishes and dining places we love
When the bowl of crispy fried rice, peanuts, preserved pork, green onions and lime juice arrives, I become temporarily obsessed. The other dishes on the table fade into the background as I focus all my affection and attention on you. After a couple of helpings of that oh-so-satisfying crispy, citrusy, salty concoction wrapped up in a Laotian lettuce taco with sprigs of mint and cilantro, I start to feel guilty.
Get a taste of Laos in the East Bay
Dinnertime usually promises a wait at Champa Garden, a long-time, local favorite that is hidden away in a residential neighborhood. With a Beerlao (Laotian beer, of course) in hand, though, the wait does not seem so painful. Before you know it, you will be seated at your table with a quick secession of delicious dishes making their way towards your table.
The Best Places To Eat In Oakland
There’s a sizable Laotian population in the East Bay, and this restaurant should not be missed if you’re craving Laotian food. It’s located in a residential neighborhood, and you cannot miss it since there’s usually a line spilling out the front. Try the Champa sampler, which has Lao sausages, fried spring rolls, and nam khao (crispy rice salad).
The Best Popular Vietnamese Restaurants in Oakland
Champa Garden: While primarily a Laotian restaurant, Champa Garden also offers a selection of Vietnamese dishes that are worth exploring. From pho to bun thit nuong (grilled pork vermicelli), their menu offers a delicious blend of flavors from Southeast Asia.
