After a long hiatus and reshuffle in ownership, Oakland’s Italian-inspired restaurant Mama will reopen to patrons on June 25. Opened on Grand Avenue by Bay Grape‘s Stevie Stacionis and Josiah Baldivino in the summer of 2019, the popular spot struggled during the pandemic, eventually shutting its doors. Last month, it announced that it would reopen as part of a new partnership with Hi Neighbor Hospitality Group, the San Francisco restaurant company behind lauded spots like Trestle, Corridor and the Vault.

MAMA Oakland honors the owner’s late grandmother, carrying on her sugo and meatballs in its thoughtful Italian cuisine. True to its proud family origins, MAMA presents a simple but technically impressive dinner menu, taking the diner through three courses of well-crafted and seasonally inspired dishes. To top it all off, an attentive staff and inviting wine list make the Bib Gourmand winner feel like home.

This new California-Italian restaurant near Lake Merritt doesn’t have to look far to source its wines. Proprietors Stevie Stacionis and Josiah Baldivino have long run Bay Grape, a shop just a few doors down. The long list attaches symbols to the featured wines, like a big ‘T’ for tannic, one of Maurice Sendak’s “Wild Things” for natural wines, and a cassette tape for classics.

To date, there are 21 restaurants listed on the official Michelin website, including those which fall under the Michelin guide (their recommended list) and plenty which fall under their Bib Gourmand rating (their simple and skillful cooking award).

It wasn’t technically “new” by 2021, but I was thrilled about Mama in Oakland reopening this year. A group of friends and I had been looking forward to trying it and had a reservation in mid-March 2020, which obviously didn’t happen. Before long, the restaurant closed and its future did not look promising.
