What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Teni East Kitchen is praised for its unique Burmese-African fusion cuisine, with many highlighting the refreshing pea shoot salad, flavorful curries, and crispy fried fish. The contemporary ambiance and attentive service add to the positive dining experience. However, some reviewers note inconsistency in cooking and a potentially loud dining environment due to acoustics and music.
"We enjoyed crispy fried fish and chicken cardamom curry, plus the kale fermented tea leaves salad with coconut rice and roti. All were fabulous! Highly recommended for unique flavorful dining. Only the fried fish had a spicy sauce; the other dishes were mildly spiced."

"Sweet little restaurant with a lovely take on Burmese food. Curries, salads, lassis and more.
We shared the signature pea shoot salad, which was delicious. And then had a lunch special of spicy noodles with salad, and the chickpea tofu with garlic chili sauce. Truth, all the sauces tasted the same to me, and they were delicious. Top it off with a mango-ginger lassi and you’ll be satisfyingly full."

"Calming ambiance | Delicious food | Great service
Best Burmese food in the East Bay! Food arrived quick, great portions too! The lamb curry had us licking our fingers and it was at least 4 servings. The Pea Shoot salad was so refreshing on a summer afternoon!
Need to try all their other dishes too, as the flavors were spot on."

Black-Owned Restaurants in San Francisco: Essential Bay Area Places
This spot earned a Bib Gourmand from the Michelin Guide in 2019 for its welcoming atmosphere, affordable prices, and unique menu that’s helmed by Tiyo Shibabaw. “The chef/owner is from Ethiopia, but she’s doing a kind of Burmese-African-fusion-inspired cuisine, which is really fantastic. She opened her roti shop Aman Cafe, next door, which is definitely a highlight of Oakland right now.” Stop by during lunch to dig into specials like Coconut Curry (with veggies or shrimp) and gluten-free Teni Spicy Noodles (with veggies, chicken, or shrimp) for just $14 or $15, or go all out for dinner with roti and dips and an array of curried options, plus Orange Saffron Lemon Cake that’s served with Coconut Ice Cream for dessert.

Temescal’s Teni East Kitchen is a one-of-a-kind Asian fusion spot that draws heavily on Myanmar and Burmese influences with touches of Southeast Asia, India, and Ethiopia. The sparse, wood-lined space serves roti with curry, kale tea leaf salad, and coconut shrimp curry. House signatures, like a crisp pea shoot salad (laden with peanuts, shallots, chickpeas, garlic, and lime), steal the show.
Great gluten-free food in the East Bay
Nearly everything on the (labeled) menu at this underrated Burmese restaurant is gluten-free, from the meaty curries and spicy rice noodles to the distinctive tea leaf salad made with baby kale. The nearby Burma Superstar in Temescal also offers plenty of gluten-free options, but I prefer Teni East’s slightly classier vibe and creativity. (And the lack of a line doesn’t hurt!)
Must-Try Vegan Asian Food in Oakland
This trendy little California-inspired Burmese spot on Broadway hits the mark on both ambiance and food. The vibe is modernly minimalist and totally date-night appropriate. The menu offers an entire section of vegan (and gluten free) choices.

The tea leaf salad and the roti at Teni East Kitchen; we recently had a beef shank curry there that was also really delicious.
