Tobi's Poke & Shave Ice

Poke is a Hawaiian cuisine that is perhaps most recognizable on the mainland. Over the last few years, poke shops serving delicious, diced raw fish have been popping up all over North America including in my hometown of Edmonton (where there are two poke places Ono Poke and Splash Poke). There’s all sorts of raw fish and seafood that can be used for poke, and now there are also cooked proteins that get included with poke offerings too, but tuna and salmon are probably the most popular fish used for poke.

Conveniently located in Paia Town, Tobi’s might not be the first place you think of to enjoy a meal, beyond a sweet shave ice to cool off, anyway. But what most travelers don’t know is that Tobi’s serves up some of the best Poke Plates and Seared Ahi Salads on Maui. Rumor has it that they get their fish from the same people who supply Mama’s Fish House, and it definitely tastes like it.

If you’re heading to Paia on the way to the Road to Hana, Tobi’s Shave Ice is a must-stop. They have all the typical shave ice flavors like watermelon, cherry, and strawberry, plus yummy tropical ones like lychee, passion fruit, and guava. While shave ice is in their name, Tobi’s Shave Ice is actually an awesome spot to get plate lunches and some of the best poke in Maui.

Tobi’s offers much more than shaved ice so don’t let the name fool you into overlooking this as a viable stop for authentic Hawaiian cuisine. Tobi has one of the best “Poke Bowls” on Maui!. They offer tender and super fresh Ahi along with a variety of flavors from ginger (sweet), wasabi (spicy), and some with a mayo base.

There is more than one place to get shave ice on Maui, but the only place we recommend is Tobi’s Shave Ice. Their ice shave is so fine, the cones are massive, and they have the best variety such as pickled mango, lychee & passion fruit.

At first, I was sad to see the bed of lettuce (don’t be fooled). I had a bite, then another, followed by another. I was so concerned with my kids wanting another bite (they’re not big fish eaters - and of course they loved it!).

If you’re craving a local favorite, head to Ululani’s Shave Ice. Pick from its soft, fluffy ice creations topped with all-natural syrups made from sugar cane or tropical fruits such as guava, mango, passion fruit, and pineapple.

Tobi’s Shave Ice: Shave ice a MUST in Maui, and Tobi’s doesn’t disappoint. The syrups are locally sourced and there’s lots of outdoor seating. And always add the coconut ice cream for that perfectly creamy flavor.

What it is: Pronounced POH-kay, this native Hawaiian dish consists of diced raw fish. The fish chunks are usually marinated with a soy sauce-based blend. In a small portion, it’s served as a side dish.

This little stop in Paia is such a great find, especially if you like good poke!. I found myself wandering over here to check out the savory items, even though they are known for their shave ice.

This place has way more to offer than just delicious shave ice. Tobi’s also has one of the best Poke Bowls on Maui, hands down!. How can you go wrong with tender and super fresh Ahi?
