It's wild that one cash-only spot in Bella Vista makes the city's best pizzas and cheesesteaks. But that's Angelo's for you. Come when you want the best of both worlds, like their cheesesteak on seeded crackly bread (that they bake in-house), the signature Upside Down pie that buries a layer of cheese beneath mounds of tomato sauce, and a classic margherita with the creamiest fior di latte in the city ( just be prepared to wait).

Getting a meal at Angelo’s Pizzeria, a small shop nestled in South Philly's Bella Vista neighborhood, can be a bit of a challenge. For those who remember jumping through hoops to pick up a pie at Pizzeria Beddia, it’s a similar process: no phone, cash only, long waits. But people do wait, and with good reason: Angelo’s has some of the best pizza and cheesesteaks in South Philly.

If you’re coming to Philly with a focus on eating (the correct attitude) you’ve probably been led to believe you need a cheesesteak. The one at Angelo’s is one of the greatest in the city, though you’ll have to brave the phone-only ordering system to eat it. (Dedicate 10 or 15 minutes to calling over and over and over and over. You will eventually get through. Or go place your order in person and walk around for forty-ish minutes while you wait.) They also have great, thin-crust pies and stellar Italian hoagies.

What it is: A thick crust square pie that’s first topped with cheese, and then finished with a hearty layer of sauce. “There are a couple of really good pizza spots, and Angelo’s is up there with the best, and there are only a few really good cheesesteak spots, and Angelo’s is also up there with the best. Their cutlets are up there, too, so basically they’re best in class in everything they do, which makes it worth the trouble of trying to get through to them on the phone.

So, I am required to start off with the most known food of the city, the cheesesteak. The first spot on my list of the best cheap eats in Philadelphia goes to Angelo’s Pizzeria, a small shop popular for its pizza, cheesesteaks, and hoagies. Though it seems like your typical neighborhood pizza shop, people travel from all over to try the food here.

Angelo’s Pizza has quickly become one of Philly’s best pizza shops, but they are also well known for their cheesesteak. In a city full of cheesesteak shops, this pizza place has stolen the show as many Philadelphian’s favorite place to grab a cheesesteak. The secret to their pizza is the same reason their cheesesteak has grown popular: the bread.

If there is anything Angelo’s doesn’t excel at, I’ve yet to find it. The outer ring of this pizza’s crust was unbelievably light and airy, while its overall taste was exceptional. The sauce had just a touch of sweetness; fresh basil leaves added an additional layer of flavor; and the high quality Mozzarella was used judiciously, as it should be.

You'll have no trouble finding a cheesesteak in Philly, of course—but none are like Angelo's. It's served on a sublime roll from Sarcone's Bakery down the street and filled with sliced steak, melted cheese (Cooper Sharp, American, provolone, Cheese Whiz, or Long Hot Cheese Whiz), and sautéed onions. The pizza is delicious too, by the way.

It’s Angelo’s Pizzeria showing up on one of our lists again. Hey, don’t knock our romance for this place as it’s the place to go for cheesesteaks, hoagies, and yes, pizza. It’s no secret that this is one of the best things to do in Philadelphia. For legendary pizza and one of the best cheesesteaks in the city, Angelo’s Pizzeria is the place to be. This South Philly staple is a great option for families, whether you’re a local or visiting the city for the weekend.

Also known for its pizza, which was very tasty, we were on a cheesesteak mission and it didn’t disappoint. Angelo’s had the longest line (because most were there for the pizza and cheesesteak). We thought the bread was tied with Barclay Prime as the best.
