One restaurant that appears on just about everybody's best-of Portland list is Andina. With the tagline, "A Taste of Peru in the Pearl," Andina has taken traditional South American cuisine to the level of fine art. Located in the heart of Portland's Pearl District, the neighborhood is comprised of boutique shops, art galleries and old industrial building converted into high-end lofts. Andina has a formal dining room and a more casual bar featuring live, Latin-influnced music every night of the week.

The Pearl’s popular Peruvian restaurant Andina is open for the holiday, serving a South American–inspired Thanksgiving meal. The four-course dinner is $95 per person and starts with sweet potato tart as an amuse-bouche; each following course includes multiple options, with highlights including roast chicken with Thanksgiving jus, a butternut squash quinotto (quinoa risotto), and beef ribs with salsa criolla. Reservations are available from 2 to 8pm for both dining room and bar seating.

One of my fondest memories after I got the celiac diagnosis was walking into Andina and having them hand me their special gluten-free menu; I could confidently eat anything listed on that beautiful sheet of paper, bless their gluten-free souls. However, while we do have places like Andina that are both safe and delicious, plenty of others aren’t. You’re better off picking a place and calling ahead to make sure they are amenable to and forewarned about your particular allergies.

The Pearl District’s multi-story Peruvian destination lost a little heat off its fastball a decade or so ago — and picked up some South American competition in downtown’s Lechon (113 S.W. This spot received quite the hype a few years ago when it was just hitting the restaurant scene, but the press has subsided, making it easier to get reservations and providing a more mellow dining atmosphere. The food is colorful and diverse, pulling from several regions from the area, including the Pacific coast and the high terrain of Lima.

After almost two decades as a Portland institution, Andina, in the Pearl District, recently underwent some big changes. In early 2021, the Peruvian-food mecca hired a new executive chef, opened a street-food-focused sister restaurant and reoriented their menu around seasonal Andean crops. But even as it ushers in the new, Andina’s food remains deeply rooted in tradition.

Andina is a posh Peruvian restaurant and tapas bar in the Pearl District that serves the gluten-free/celiac community well. The food is a sight to see as it’s colorful and beautifully presented, but it’s even better to eat. From the ceviche and yuca fries to the seared scallops and rack of lamb, Andina dishes are an adventure of flavors and rarely disappoints.

This restaurant has a gluten free menu available and came recommended by a few of my followers. It was one of the first places in Portland to offer properly gluten free food and staff really know their stuff. Note it is not a fully gluten free kitchen but they take precautions to prevent cross contamination.
