Reviews Summary

Canard garners praise for its creative and playful menu, particularly the iconic Duck Stack and inventive small plates. The intimate setting and chef's counter experience are highly valued by diners seeking a personal touch. However, some reviews indicate that certain dishes may not live up to the hype, with occasional concerns about flavor balance and consistency, alongside a few mentions of unprofessional staff behavior.

"My husband and I ate here last night and had an amazing experience! Loved that seating is minimal, which allowed for an intimate eating experience. Our waitress was very attentive and super friendly. We especially loved sitting at the chef’s counter and watching our food created. Great chef team too! They worked without stress and each meal felt like it had love in it. We are looking forward to trying Le Pigeon next time! 10/10 experience"

Bailey B.

"We had dinner here at 7:40pm yesterday. It seemed busy for a Wednesday night. Took a few mins to be seated. One thing I noticed right away was that this restaurant was quite noisy. Because they had creative dishes, we decided to order several and share. They all tasted good except the trout meuniere. My partner enjoyed the drinks. Their menu was small. If you're a picky eater, you wouldn't have many choices. Our server with long blond hair was attentive. What bothered me was a hostess/female server with medium hair was talking bad about customers with her coworker who had a tatto on his right arm. Not professional at all. I don't want to pay a 3% staff wellness fee when they talk bad about customers. We will not go back."

"We had high expectations and was disappointed since It’s not easy to reserve a suitable time on weekends + we had great experience at Le Pigeon.

The worst dish is the Rabbit and Eel Terrine. They designed it to be presented as an Asian fusion with nori and avocado salad(very green crab roe+Japanese pickle ginger+Jalapeño) with a lemon flavored cream(mayo?) with furikake. When I make them together my mouth is covered with the cheap taste of the furikake cream(or mayonnaise?) and pickled ginger. I can’t even feel the presence of the terrine at all, which is the name of the dish.

The most recommend-able dish is the foie gras dumplings. It’s like a Xiaolongbao soup dumpling that the foie gras will explode from the dumpling in your mouth. The tom yum soup is kind of unnecessary, kimchi or vinegar might be more appropriate from my own perspective."

The 21 Best Restaurants In Portland, Oregon - Portland, OR

This intimate spot from the Le Pigeon team reminds us of a Parisian wine bar because of the incredible small plates and eclectic wines by the glass. Except nobody who’s hanging out and having dinner at 10pm in the 11th arrondissement would be eating the kind of food you’ll find here. We’re talking about classics like oeufs en mayonnaise, sure, but also their now-iconic mini steam burgers, Portland’s answer to White Castle.

The Hottest New Restaurants on the Scene

Canard, which means "duck" in French and sticks to Rucker’s bird-as-restaurant-names theme, is Rucker’s more casual concept that serves food for 16 hours a day. “If you’re awake and want to eat, we are probably open,” says Rucker. Service is laid back and the menu feels like it has been pulled out of the brain of a stoner who aced culinary school.

25 Best Brunch Spots in Portland

Portlanders have Verdigris, included in our Top 40 Restaurant list, Bergerac, Petit Provence, and Chez Marin for french food brunch options, but we are loving the very hot Canard on Burnside, which is not only open for weekend brunch, but also during the week every day for breakfast (and many of those same brunch menu items). Canard sits next door to its sister restaurant Le Pigeon (also on our top 40 list and our best burger list) from the same owner and chef, two-time James Beard award winner Gabriel Rucker (Best Chef Northwest 2013 and Rising Star Chef of the Year 2011) and not only hit our best 40 Portland restaurants, but is one of our best Portland brunch spots for sophisticated yet playful French morning fare. Definitely try the perfect omelet with goat cheese and fine herbs, the Oeufs en Mayonnaise with trout roe, bacon, roasted garlic, and smoky maple or, if you’re feeling wild, go for the Duck Stack with pancakes, duck gravy, tabasco onions, a duck egg and do add seared foie gras.

A more low-key offshoot of Portland’s famed French restaurant, Le Pigeon, Canard in Buckman offers a taste of fine dining at a price point and setting that’s more reminiscent of a bistro and wine bar. Small plates are key here, so make sure that you and your date are on the same page about sharing because you’ll want a taste of everything. The ambiance is a cross between casual and sophisticated, reflected in the menu with dishes like tantalizingly elegant steam burgers, foie gras dumplings and the extravagant duck stack pancakes.

Warning: Canard’s happy hour can inspire stunt eating in the form of downing as many of their iconic steam burgers in one sitting as possible—because the li’l fellas are just $3 each, half off their usual price tag. The quintessential slider, with melted American cheese, onions, relish, and a thin griddled patty, is practically perfect, and pairs well with a $3 can of Montucky Cold Snack or a $6 aperitif on the rocks, and half off oysters ($9 for half dozen/$18 for full dozen).

Since opening in April, Canard by chef Gabriel Rucker has generated plenty of terrific buzz from locals and critics alike. It might be billed as a wine bar – which happens to be next door to Rucker’s Le Pigeon, one of Portland’s most celebrated restaurants – but really, it defies convention. For starters, Canard is open morning through late night, with two exceptionally-priced happy hours offered daily (4-5pm and 10pm-midnight).
