Reviews Summary
Empire Chinese Kitchen is celebrated for its vibrant atmosphere and excellent dim sum, particularly the soup dumplings and bacon fried rice. Diners appreciate the attentive service and the trendy vibe. While the food is generally praised, some find certain dishes like duck buns less impressive, and service can be inconsistent during peak times. The restaurant is also noted for its accommodating gluten-free and vegan options.
"Soup Dumplings/Bao Buns are so good! That Bacon Fried Rice was absolutely amazing. Definitely recommend going."
Graham Sanders
"A very hip spot for quite delicious Chinese fare. We tried a few dishes, all nicely executed with authentic flavor and flare while pleasing to the American palate. The plate arrangement suits solo or couples' portions, unlike old school setups, where food is meant to be shared by many off large oval plates. Empire serves up elevated home-style creations with matching technique and subtle spice blends that make them memorable and reminiscent of grandma's cooking. The food is truly delightful! Service is attentive, mindful and respectful. The space is well-appointed with personal touches everywhere that make you feel welcome and like you're dining in someone's home. Long live the Empire!"
Daniel
"Atmosphere was lively and the service was great! The food was pretty good - wish there were more dumpling options without pork, but overall everything was flavorful. My favorite dishes were the jalapeño shrimp & the chicken potstickers! I was able to walk in and get a seat right away at the counter on a busy Friday night."

Portland’s popular dim sum and noodle joint, Empire, is a secret vegan gem. About one-third of the menu is vegetarian or vegan, including steamy vegetable ramen, Szechuan cold cucumbers in a garlic-chili vinaigrette, and Chinese eggplant in a tangy garlic sauce. Go early or make reservations as tables fill quickly (the bar is a first come, first serve spot, and full menu service is available).
Gluten-Free Southern Maine Guide
When I found it at Lili & Loo's in New York City, I was ecstatic ( read more about that here.) And when I discovered Empire in Portland has celiac protocols on their menu, including gluten-free dishes like steamed dumplings and fried rice, I just about cried. Empire is a Chinese restaurant currently only open for takeout but take celiac disease seriously. There is even a "celiac" option when you order online and they give you gluten-free soy sauce packets.

Before Empire, it was tough to find a good dumpling, but I’m still a fan. Dim sum could possibly be one of my favorite food groups, especially when it’s filled with pork, or lobster, or even shrimp. On a cold day, the braised beef ramen satisfies all cravings for something hot and tasty.
