This pizza place on Portland’s waterfront serves up some serious, and seriously good, meat and vegetarian slabs made from local and organic ingredients. Paper-thin pizzas are cooked quickly in a wood-fired clay oven, and the large salads with toasted sesame seeds, seaweed, blue or goat cheese, and ginger-tamarind vinaigrette are best eaten with a local microbrew.

If you want a more affordable spot, try the taqueria El Rayo on the neighborhood’s outskirts, Flatbread brick-oven pizza (perfect for families and right on the water), Duckfat (whose staff chef has won on Food Network’s show “Chopped”), The Thirsty Pig or the East Ender, a bright, family-friendly tavern on the east end whose chef-owner comes up with surprising takes on BBQ and pub grub. For simple but delicious takes on lobster, check out the Portland Lobster Co. right on the wharf. And, last but not least, the best place to get good chowder is Gilbert’s on Commercial Street.

Flatbread Company: Pizza in Portland wasn’t initially that high on our list but everyone raved about Flatbread Company and I'm so glad we made it there Saturday night. It's a phenomenal pizza spot with a casual, family-friendly ambiance, waterfront views, and great beer selection (a common theme in Portland!). I wasn't feeling 100% but still thoroughly enjoyed the food, which is saying something...they're randomly about to open a location in Dallas so I'm excited to take my parents there next time I'm in town!

Located on the Portland waterfront, Flatbread offers one of Portland’s premier dining experiences. The restaurant’s interior is cozy and welcoming thanks to the large earthen oven in which the flatbread pizzas are cooked. Flatbread is committed to using organic ingredients whenever possible and makes a vegan pizza with caramelized onions, mushrooms, Kalmata olives, homemade garlic oil, and an organic herb blend.

Watch your pizza being made in the wood-fired clay oven a stone’s throw from the water. The thin, crisp, and organic wheat pies come with exciting options like “harvest” made with local butternut squash, maple fennel sausage, fresh sage, McIntosh apples, red onions, Cabot sharp cheddar, herbs, garlic oil, Parmesan, and whole milk mozzarella. Wash it down with one of their local craft beers at Flatbread Company.

If you didn’t opt for a picnic at the park, you should head to Flatbread Company (about a 15 minute drive) for a delicious wood-fired flatbread pizza with a beautiful view of the water. This is one of my favorite vegetarian-friendly restaurants in Portland. There are parking garages around the restaurant where you can leave your car parked for the rest of the day as you won’t need it.

He continued to list Portland pies and pizza restaurants, from wood-fired pizza at Flatbread to “old-school places” like Pizza Joint. Then there’s his own Detroit-style pizza served at Noble, the only Detroit-style pie in town, inspired by a pizzeria he visited while on a barbecue tour of, nope, not Detroit, but Austin. Flatbread has locations outside of Portland, so if you’ve been to another spot before, you should expect more of the same…except this is on the water. Seriously, it’s a great spot right off Commercial Street. The location means that it can get busy at times, but Flatbread also has a solid craft beer selection.

I was also dealing with pizza cravings and getting a hankering to try Flatbread Co. (also recommended here), so we set off down the hill with that as our goal. We passed Kathadin on the way, another intriguing restaurant; we were tempted to stop right there, but those cursed pizza cravings were too strong.

There are a few places in Portland for pizza, and this one definitely makes the list of those top spots. The right amount of crunch and the right amount of doughiness, and topped with amazing combinations of fresh ingredients, these pizzas are a necessary stop on your Portland food crawl.

The only one that is wood-fired is also the only one with outdoor seating on the waterfront and that’s Flatbread Company on Commercial Street. They have one specialty vegan pie. Also get the salad; it’s easily the best in the city.

Flatbread Company has 17 locations in ME, MA, NH, CT, HI, and TX. But the Portland location just might be the prettiest. They use NH-based Peace of Mind pizza crust and at your request, they’ll prepare your pizza separately.
