Carlos Orozco

"The service was excellent and the food felt like it was cooked at home. Tasty and authentic. Small intimate area. Maybe 6-7 tables. 100% would return."

Bryan Syktich

"This is my favourite restaurant in Portland! And probably just one of my faves!

The ambiance is just so cozy — ran completely by this lovely German couple. Have been here multiple times and everything is so good, but the potato pancakes + schnitzel + potato au gratin + roasted veggies are just amazing. The bread they give is amazing as well. Clearly made fresh in house in their tiny kitchen. BYOB!

Definitely make a reservation."

Best 75 places to eat and drink in Greater Portland in 2025

While comforting, homey German classics — think tangy cucumber salad, bratwurst with sauerkraut and some of the most exquisitely fried schnitzel on the East Coast — sound most appealing when the weather is chilly, don’t neglect this sweet little Bayside restaurant in the summer. Not only is Schulte & Herr a perfect choice for avoiding summertime crowds, it is also BYOB, so bring a bottle of your best chilled Gewurtztraminer and a “Guten Appetit.” Read the review. They make a super-thin, delicately breaded pork schnitzel that is perfectly accompanied by some German potato salad and a side of cheesy spaetzle.
