Owner Tommy Klus is constantly bringing in new, exclusive whiskies from around the world for customers to try. To encourage sampling, Scotch Lodge offers single ounce pours of everything they keep in stock.

Portland whiskey drinkers rejoiced when former Multnomah Whiskey Library curator Tommy Klus opened Scotch Lodge in 2019, and it didn't take long for it to get national recognition. By 2021, Esquire had named it on its list of best bars in the country. Beyond the rare whiskey bottles, the bar snacks are painstakingly crafted so they're bold enough to hold up to the most assertive cocktails on the menu (but light enough to keep your palate from being weighed down).

This cozy welcoming spot has everything one looks for; a fun atmosphere, an amazing whiskey selection, great service, exceptional cocktails, and food that will have you coming back for more. Kick your meal off with fried brie and the Namesake cocktail a combination of smoky islay whisky, cherry liqueur, sweet vermouth, amaro, and orange bitters.

The subterranean Scotch Lodge is a portal into the world of Tommy Klus, a noted whiskey-obsessive and obtainer of beyond-rare bottles. The modern classic Penicillin cocktail comes fully upgraded here with culty Ardbeg and Auchentoshan whiskies. Even if you’re not particularly hungry, you cannot leave without trying the giant fried softshell crab sandwich with white kimchi and shallots served on fluffy milk bread.

Scotch Lodge is a treasure trove of whiskies, complemented by inventive libations infused with genmaicha and coffee vermouth. Dishes including oysters with granita, albacore crudo, and pappardelle pasta with seaweed butter are popular highlights on the menu. Chef Tim Artale's playful creations, like fried Brie sticks and soft shell crab sandwiches, elevate the experience.

Located at the corner of Southeast Ash and SE 9th Avenue, Scotch Lodge is a bit of a hidden gem. Open since May 2019, this whiskey bar was named the 2019 Best Bar by Portland Monthly magazine. In addition to an incredible cocktail menu, they also feature rare and hard to find scotches and whiskies, along with delicious food.

If it weren’t a world-class cocktail bar, Scotch Lodge might be better known as a great restaurant. As is, chef Tim Artale’s slyly modernist takes on tavern fare and electric pastas are still flying just under the radar. The pickle-spiced fries are fun, as are the oysters glistening with granita and roe.

Portland Monthly magazine named Scotch Lodge the best bar in Portland in 2019. No small feat, considering they opened that very year. But in a lot of ways, the award is not surprising when considering the well-curated cocktail menu, relaxed vibe and expert execution by the talented bar tenders.
