This award-winning restaurant is set with intimate round tables, white tablecloths, and warm lighting, the perfect ambiance for what turned out to be a parade of beautifully composed dishes, accompanied by a curated selection of wines with each course. A five or seven course tasting menu showcases chef Matthew Varga’s skill with seasonal local ingredients and creative presentation, and dishes can also be ordered a la carte. We feasted on Hudson Valley foie gras, Crescent Farms duck, Point Judith sea scallops with fresh corn polenta, russet potato gnocchi, and more, finishing with a dessert that was as delicious as it was picturesque.

It’s the kind of restaurant where a dish of Point Judith sea scallops is followed by a string of ingredients that leave a lot to the imagination (i.e., peas, leeks, bacon marmalade, carrot-ginger sauce). Gracie’s is also smack dab in the middle of the theater district, making it a great start to a slightly less expensive Broadway-esque dinner-and-a-show type of evening.

The city's best spot for a romantic meal is Table 21 in a private alcove at Gracie's, across the street from the Trinity Rep theater. Owner Ellen Gracyalny mixes sophistication with whimsy in the main dining room, and executive chef Matthew Varga sources many of his ingredients from a local Rhode Island farmer; Varga's tasting menus are a standard setter for fine dining in Providence.

Ritchey started at Slattery’s first restaurant, Gracie’s, as a server, and wanted to learn the back of the house too. While Ritchey plans to pivot careers into nutrition while studying at Johnson and Wales University, the line cook position serves as a steppingstone for her to learn how to craft healthy meals under pressure.

JWU alum and Executive Chef at Gracie’s, Matthew Varga ’05 has helped this fine dining establishment win the AAA Four Diamond award five years straight. Events and weddings are also hosted at Gracie’s. There are a number of platters, three course dinners, late night snacks and bar packages available for your special day.

The bistro is famously led by Gracie’s restaurant proprietor Ellen Slattery and might someday serve a regular dinner menu again. But right now, as Ellie’s front of house manager Samara Wald pointed out to me, other than the (very few) chain restaurants around, there aren’t many places to grab a slice of cake at night.

Gracie’s is the real deal when it comes to fine dining in Providence. With their James Beard-caliber cuisine, impeccable service, and lavish atmosphere, Gracie’s sets the standard for excellence. Many consider it the crème de la crème of Providence’s culinary scene.

Spoiler alert: Gracie’s is one my favorite restaurants in Providence. It’s more than earned its AAA Four Diamond status with its tasty, inventive fare and outstanding service. We feasted like royalty in a dim, private room surrounded by wines of all vintages.

Just in case you don’t read this very detailed review, let me sum it up by saying that Gracie’s is was the best restaurant in Providence. I don’t want to hear about Atwells Ave. or Federal Hill. Gracie’s is was the reigning champ as far as I’m concerned.

Gracie’s may be one of the most wonderful things that has graced Providence. It is the kind of food you simply cannot get enough of. Executive chef Matthew Varga will leave you in awe with a several course menu created from fresh, local ingredients.

The interior is so immaculate that you’d believe your dining in the most expensive hotel in the world. The food is just as amazing as the setting & theme. If you’re looking for a good time and even better food, this is your place.

Some other places such as Broadway Bistro, Food by North, Nicks on Broadway, Gracies, Bacaro, Flan y Ajo, Julian's, The Kitchen, Taste of India, Bombay, Cuban Revolution, El Rancho Grande, etc... are some of the best around.
