The modern steakhouse serves LeFevre’s riffs on retro steakhouse favorites in addition to dishes inspired by his roots, travels and the best artisanal ingredients. Expect an extensive selection of wet and dry-aged USDA Prime and Certified Angus Beef prepared on the kitchen’s massive wood-fired grill, along with entrees like pot roast made with braised Wagyu short ribs, baby carrots, new potato and cippolini onion; housemade Emmental Popovers and Parker House Rolls; and appetizers and sides like chilled jumbo shrimp cocktail and Swedish meatballs.

Located in Manhattan Beach, the restaurant is named in honor of partners Mike, Chris and Tom Simms’ grandfather, whose portrait looms over the entrance. Most modern steakhouses owe their existence to Morton’s, which aptly blends classic steak cuts with contemporary accents in its many offshoots.

Post (arguably the restaurant whose opening ushered in the new era of dining in the South Bay), Little Sister, Fishing with Dynamite, The Strand House, and the Arthur J only a few steps further away. At the easternmost point of the developed strip sits Love & Salt, the Italian restaurant only a couple years old. It’s easy to overlook it from the street at night, with its hidden door and painted logo in the far corner, but the door opens into a consistently-packed dining room.

The Arthur J opened its doors in 2015 as the latest in a series of restaurants owned and operated by the Simms family, beginning with The Kettle in 1975. The steakhouse, with decor inspired by a 1960s Palm Springs getaway, is named after Arthur Simms, the family’s patriarch. To create a “really great steakhouse” that offers wet and dry-aged USDA prime and certified Angus beef prepared on a wood-fired grill, another led by head chef David LeFevre.

Whether you have dinner with an important client, looking for a luxury dinner date, or just craving a large chunk of meat to enjoy with a martini, The Arthur J is a perfect place to be. The restaurant features dark leather booths, a huge bar, and mid-century brass light fixtures that will satisfy your Old Fashioned taste. Situated in the heart of the neighborhood, it’s the ultimate steakhouse experience in a midcentury reinvented setting. The menu is extensive but the staff will help you navigate through their various options, all while enjoying the warm and inviting ambience of the restaurant.

Chef David LeFevre also put his stamp on this mid-century modern steakhouse, which he co-owns with the family-run Simms restaurant group. The throwback menu is all about the beef – but order the Emmental popovers with strawberry butter to start and one of its excellent martinis to drink. LeFevre’s new Mediterranean-American venture in Hermosa Beach, AttaGirl, is also worth the drive.

This is a fantastic steakhouse that truly nails that classic, old-school steakhouse atmosphere. Picture dimly lit, swanky décor that feels like a step back in time. They serve up some of the juiciest, perfectly cooked food, and when it comes to dessert, you absolutely can't leave without trying their famous warm butter cake.

This sleek steakhouse is one of the more ‘traditional’ offerings of Manhattan Beach. The Arthur J‘s retro vibe and the fact that it’s a steakhouse makes it appear tamer than the fusion and modern cuisines its neighbors offer. But don’t think that it’s a basic food destination because it’s not.

My favorite dish to prepare for Valentine's Day has to be our Coconut Passion Fruit Cake of the Month because as we're making it, the kitchen fills with aromatics like the toasted coconut and the flowery fragrance of the passion fruit, making it feel like we're really baking at the beach.

An ideal restaurant experience requires a perfect storm of welcoming hosts, balanced cocktails, a beautiful space, delicious food, an impressive wine list and dessert that holds up to all that has come before it. Few places truly have it all. But the Arthur J is one of them.

Among them are Fonz’s (steaks), the aforementioned Strand House, The Arthur J and MB Post. We like Mangiamos just up from the pier, Esperanza Cocina de la Playa a little further up Manhattan Beach Blvd., and up in El Porto, the nice-but-casual Fish House.
