Every beach town has its own classic and unique ice cream shop, and since The Royal Treat closed for good in 2023, the best place to hit up in Rehoboth Beach is now the one with an oddly generic name — The Ice Cream Store. Opened in 1970, it's evolved over the years, thinking big and outside of the ice cream tub to offer up outrageous flavor combinations with monikers to match. Owner Chip Hearn told The Daily Times, "We're not stuck with a basic flavor concept," and he really meant it.

There are a couple of hotels that line Rehoboth Beach’s boardwalk, like the Atlantic Sands and the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel, but one of the best-kept secrets is the family-friendly Avenue Inn & Spa, tucked along one of the side streets downtown just one block from the beach and boardwalk. This hotel helps you unwind after playing all day with a complimentary wine and cheese hour from 5-6 p.m. and fresh baked cookies every night at 8 p.m.

Hearn is nothing if not a promoter, and his bevy of pink-clad, mostly female counter clerks have no problem walking out onto the sidewalk to counsel you on your choice of what seems like about 3000 different flavors.

One of my go-to moves for lunch is to get my main course in one place and my dessert at another. That way you get to experience as many restaurants as possible!. That’s why I suggest stopping at Kohr Brothers for some frozen custard–the perfect chilly treat on a balmy Rehoboth Beach day.

The Ice Cream Store has continued to keep Woodside Farm Creamery busy, creating more than 100 flavors, including a maple bacon crunch ice cream and a Death by Peanut Butter flavor. “Chip keeps coming up with some crazy flavors,” says Jim Mitchell, who owns the farm with his wife, Jane.
