a few of my favorite dinner spots: joe’s inn for a tried-and-true rva classic in the heart of the fan (also great to grab a drink), pizza and beer of richmond is my favorite pizza spot (again, also great for grabbing a drink or watching a game, plus they have a large outdoor patio perfect for dogs or kids), sabai is incredible for thai food (also has a fun patio and awesome drinks!), peter chang in scott’s addition is incredible chinese with a really cool vibe (think upscale, not your average takeout), and don’t look back has my favorite tacos (plus billiards!).

This young, vibrant neighborhood is home to many college students and young professionals, which is why it has a great variety of cheap restaurants, coffee shops and drinking establishments. I had breakfast and a cup of coffee at a local café, and then I spent an hour or so meandering the district's beautiful streets. The Fan is an eclectic neighborhood, filled with gorgeous old homes as well as trendy restaurants and bars, and I could definitely see why this neighborhood is one of the city's most coveted locales.

A seminal restaurant with a sibling spot in Bon Air, Joe’s Inn is a Richmond classic. The Fan neighborhood spot is built on family and traditions, and carried by Country Greek salads, gargantuan pasta dishes, and veteran, follow-the-recipe employees like kitchen manager Jason "Tank" Walker, who has been there for 25-plus years. One of many Richmond staples on our list, Joe’s Inn is the place to get Italian in Richmond, Va. Go to the original one in The Fan, and have a meal at a restaurant that was named one of the top 100 “legend and landmark restaurants in America.” Although it may look more like a bar, don’t let the interior fool you – the food here is great. Servings are huge, the food is good, and you get a lot for your money here.

Named for the way some of the streets “fan” out from the Monroe Park area and encompassing the lovely homes on Monument Avenue divided by a walkable boulevard lined with trees as old as the city itself. Bordering the VCU campus, this area is always buzzing with youth and new ideas. Spots to hit: Boketto, Idle Hands Bakery, Emily Warden Designs, 8-1/2 takeout, Scuffletown Park, Joe’s Inn.

The Fan District, known for its stunning Victorian architecture, also offers a captivating shopping experience. Wander through its streets lined with beautiful houses, and discover an eclectic mix of boutiques, antique shops, and art galleries. Each storefront tells a story, echoing the rich history of the district and the entrepreneurial spirit of its inhabitants.

This small restaurant and bar offers some of the biggest portions in the city. Joe’s Inn serves breakfast all day, along with pizza, subs, steak, crab cakes and other classic dishes, but their spaghetti is arguably the best item on the menu. The plate of Italian goodness probably weighs close to five pounds, and the noodles are hidden by layers of gooey cheese.

This restaurant’s kid-friendly features include a Kids’ menu for children younger than 12 years old, rich with delicious food for your kids, and all these kids meals are under USD 5!. For the rest of the family, there is a regular menu, focused on American, Italian and Greek cuisine. The atmosphere is quite casual and kid-friendly with low noise levels.

If you're getting an Airbnb, The Fan is probably our best-known neighborhood—it's where we first opened Lamplighter and it's close to restaurants and shops. Very close to The Fan is Carytown, another eight to ten blocks of all independent local restaurants and boutiques. Nearly every building is a locally-owned mom-and-pop shop.

The Fan, a neighborhood named for its streets that fan out, is where many Virginia Commonwealth University (V.C.U.) students reside. In the past that meant the area was known more for its drinking establishments than its restaurants. One individual changing notions about The Fan’s dining options is chef Joe Sparatta of Heritage.

Thankfully, Joe’s lets you have it all with fresh kalamata olives, crumbled feta, pepperoncini, and juicy Hanover tomatoes.

There are tons of colorful buildings, some with more of a historic feel and some a little more modern. You can also find local shops and restaurants along the way to stop in during your shoot.

Pocahontas State Park is a quick getaway, just south of the Chesterfield Airport. Head west to High Bridge Trail State Park (~1 hr drive) or Natural Bridge State Park (~2 hr drive) for some of the most scenic views Virginia has to offer. There’s also York River State Park and Powhatan State Park.

I don’t know how many women have told me about the Greek Salad from Joe’s Inn. I always thought the restaurant was known for its big a** plates of baked spaghetti and other carb-ladden Italian favorites. Apparently the greek salad satisfies, as well.

If you want a more laid back, very Richmnd shoot check out the Fan. We'll walk all around stopping at different quirky little spots for photos. There are several cute little parks tucked into the Fan that make for great photos!
