Reviews Summary

Perly's is celebrated for its lively, retro atmosphere and creative takes on Jewish deli classics, particularly its hearty sandwiches and unique brunch dishes. While many rave about the food and attentive service, some reviewers mention long wait times and occasionally dismissive staff, though these experiences seem to be the exception. Overall, it's a highly recommended spot for an authentic and flavorful dining experience.

"Came for lunch time and left delighted and full! I had the tuna on challah and my date had the pastrami sandwich on rye. The tuna came with 4 slices of bread with very fresh and delicious veggies. Everything tasted fresh and complimented the tuna wonderfully. The chips were heavily seasoned and paired well. The pastrami was also good, and the fries were wonderfully seasoned as well. The service was attentive and friendly, even when they were in the middle of a lunch rush. We were quoted ~45 minute wait for the two of us and probably waited a total of 20 minutes before we were seated. Would come again!"

Elena Padilla

"For vibes, service, atmosphere this place is 10/10. Absolutely amazing. Our waiter was top notch and handled my dad’s jokes like a champ.

For food, kinda mid. Nothing blew me away and the tuna salad for instance was called a dill and caper but had so little flavor we had to take some capers and dill from our families fish platter.

Overall this place was fantastic and I’ll be back but that is in part due to the lack of better options and not the ridiculously outstanding flavors they served up here. Prices are also reasonable."

Sam Waters

"The sandwiches were fantastic! We tried the Reuben roast beef with Russian sauce, and the portion was generous enough to split into two for a lunch meal. They did a great job of dividing it and serving each half on separate plates. The loaded schlibby fries were amazing as well. I would love to come back and try more items on the menu."

Best Restaurants in Richmond: Coolest, Hottest, Newest Places to Eat

1961 | Monroe WardThere’s a rare moment of zen that a diner can experience when a food spot hits the trifecta: nailing the food, prices, and atmosphere. Enter Perly’s, a Jewish diner that’s been a mainstay in Richmond for nearly 60 years. The Perfect Weekend Travel Guide for Your First Visit to Richmond, Virginia

Perly’s is the hottest spot in town for the breakfast crowd, with a line forming before the Jewish delicatessen even opens on the weekends. But go ahead and brave the wait, adding your name to the list if necessary (make sure you hang out within shouting distance while you wait, or you might miss your table!). Once inside, you might be surprised you’re not currently in NYC – the menu alone is enough to evoke that sentiment but add in the subway tiles and art deco elements and bada bing, bada boom you might just feel tempted to change your accent, or start using phrases you’ve never uttered before.

The Restaurant List

In a downtown space that has served as a culinary cornerstone since 1961 (with some changing of hands and cuisines), Perly’s riffs on Jewish delights and whips up traditional deli dishes you rarely find outside of New York. Where else in Richmond can you sit down for a nice knish and a smoked fish platter?. Unmissable wild inventions by chef and co-owner Kevin Roberts include Schlubby Fries — basically the inside of a Reuben over fried potatoes — and the Chazerai Hot Dog, embellished with a fried rye pickle and egg salad.

This classic Jewish delicatessen puts a fun spin on traditional staples like matzoh ball soup and latkes with takes such as the “Jewbano,” a Cubano sandwich with sliced tongue and beef brisket instead of the traditional ham and pork, or “Jewish Egg Rolls” which are filled with corned beef, kishka, and sauerkraut. The entire wine list is kosher, and the cocktail menu features gems such as the Larry David, a sipper made with your choice of vodka or gin alongside housemade celery soda, celery seed, and a sugar rim.

The 100 best restaurants in Richmond in 2025

Done up like a vintage version of a big-city deli with pressed tin ceilings, black and white photos and wooden booths, Perly's features a menu about as “Jew-ish” as disgraced former Rep. George Santos. While both are purely American concoctions, the menu — unlike Santos — contains greatness. Jewish deli staples get jooshed up with Russian Hollandaise on corned beef hash, roasted cherry mostarda on the tzimmes and chicken schnitzel sandwiches served on challah.

Richmond's best deli sandwiches

Perly’s has been a local sandwich staple since 1961, but for the Richmond sandwich scene, it was a game changer when Kevin Roberts (with business partner Johnny Giavos) took it over and reopened it with its reemphasized Jewish deli theme in 2014. Whether it’s on challah, seeded rye, marbled rye, pumpernickel or a Kummelweck roll — you can’t make a bad sandwich choice here.
