Reviews Summary

Proper Pie Co. is lauded for its exceptional New Zealand-style pies, both savory and sweet, with flaky crusts and flavorful fillings. The friendly staff and fast service are frequently praised, though some note that certain sweet pies can lack sweetness or have an undesired topping. The takeout-only nature and potential for long lines are minor drawbacks for this beloved neighborhood bakery.

"It was great!
I've been here twice, and both times were amazing. There's no indoor seating or bathroom available, but there are two tables outside. The process is simple and efficient: just order, pay, and get your pie.

The steak and cheese pie is absolutely delicious, you can really taste the chunks of beef, and the savory sauce ties it all together perfectly. We tried the steak and cheese, the sausage roll, and the butter chicken pie. The sausage roll has a solid filling; it was a little dry, but still tasty. The butter chicken pie had great flavor as well, but the steak and cheese is still my favorite.

We haven't made it to the sweet pies yet, but one day, we definitely will!"

"These pies are incredible. We tried both savory and sweet and had no complaints. The line is long but goes fast. Take your pies around the corner to Libby Park for a view while you eat. We tried the Lamb & Vegetable pie, Pork/Apple/Cheddar pie, and the Banoffee sweet pie. Will definitely be here again soon!"

Troy Smith

"Our first time here, well, thought was take the pies back to Florida…. wrong! I sat down to see my chicken mushroom and leek pie, and after one delicious bite, it was gone. Never missed a savory bite, the incredible flaky buttery crust, stuffed with white meat chicken, huge mushroom pieces, followed with oooh goofy leeks. The pie is a masterpiece. And for dessert… strawberry rhubarb, fruit and currant pie, the list goes on. I just couldn’t stop! The staff are just as warm and friendly as their pies.
Thank you for starting something I won’t be able to stop at just one. Until, we come back to visit again, thank you!"

The 100 best restaurants in Richmond in 2025

Chef Neil Smith is from New Zealand and missed a taste of home, so he launched Proper Pie with wife Nikki Price in 2012. The tiny pie shop in Church Hill has been drawing lines of hungry Richmonders, who can’t get enough of its sweet and savory pies, ever since. The New Zealand savory pies are a thing of beauty in and of themselves: they’re roughly the size of your palm, perfect hand-held disks of buttery pastry stuffed with any number of delights, including steak and cheese, pork chile verde and butter chicken.

Step through their pie hole (the front door) for sausage rolls and savory pies filled with everything from steak and cheese to jackfruit BBQ that will make my English son-in-law feel like he’s back home. Then polish off your meal with a sweet slice that ranges in a variety of fruity, nutty, chocolatey, and creamy flavors.

My Favorite Restaurants in Richmond, VA

The savory pies at Proper Pie Co have never let me down with their flaky crusts and intensely-flavored fillings. It’s takeout only, but that’s not a problem in the Church Hill neighborhood where there are lots of green parks in walking distance (Libbie Hill Park has a great view of the city). What to Order: I’m always underwhelmed by the sweet pies, so stick to the savory ones.

Small, half-hour tours are offered at the church, and afterward, you can stop for lunch at the Proper Pie Co. Although this is not a free pie shop, because that's only something of our dreams, it does offer an inexpensive brunch and some of the best pie you can get your hands on. Reviewers note that it's "consistently perfect," so even the harshest pie critic should love it.

From there you can hit up Proper Pie (which McVick mentioned and which is awesome). This area is called Church Hill. As the name suggests, it's a hill with a church on it, but the church is the church in which Patrick Henry gave the "Give me liberty or give me death speech" - if you're into that type of thing.
