Chef Neil Smith is from New Zealand and missed a taste of home, so he launched Proper Pie with wife Nikki Price in 2012. The tiny pie shop in Church Hill has been drawing lines of hungry Richmonders, who can’t get enough of its sweet and savory pies, ever since. The New Zealand savory pies are a thing of beauty in and of themselves: they’re roughly the size of your palm, perfect hand-held disks of buttery pastry stuffed with any number of delights, including steak and cheese, pork chile verde and butter chicken.

With bragging rights to a 2020 Traveler’s Choice award from Tripadvisor, Proper Pie Co. is a delicious destination for a main meal and a sweet treat wrapped in flaky crust. Step through their pie hole (the front door) for sausage rolls and savory pies filled with everything from steak and cheese to jackfruit BBQ that will make my English son-in-law feel like he’s back home. Then polish off your meal with a sweet slice that ranges in a variety of fruity, nutty, chocolatey, and creamy flavors.

Plan to arrive at Proper Pie Co. for lunch a few minutes before they open at noon; this pie shop is known as one of the best around, receiving the highest praises from famous Chef and food critic Alton Brown during his visit to the capital. The savory pies at Proper Pie Co have never let me down with their flaky crusts and intensely-flavored fillings. It’s takeout only, but that’s not a problem in the Church Hill neighborhood where there are lots of green parks in walking distance (Libbie Hill Park has a great view of the city). What to Order: I’m always underwhelmed by the sweet pies, so stick to the savory ones.

Although this is not a free pie shop, because that's only something of our dreams, it does offer an inexpensive brunch and some of the best pie you can get your hands on. From there you can hit up Proper Pie (which McVick mentioned and which is awesome). This area is called Church Hill. As the name suggests, it's a hill with a church on it, but the church is the church in which Patrick Henry gave the "Give me liberty or give me death speech" - if you're into that type of thing.

There are cake fans and there are pie fans, but Proper Pie Co. has the ability to blow away anyone, even someone on #teamcake. As you could guess, Richmond’s popular pie shop is already sold out of most Thanksgiving preorders. However, you can take a list of what they were offering on their website in hopes of snagging something next year (or in the days leading up to Thanksgiving).

This is easily one of the best restaurants in Richmond, and it’s also one of the most unique. When the owners moved here from New Zealand, they lamented that hand pies like the ones they had at home weren’t available in RVA. So… they decided to make them.
