At Masullo Pizza, artisan pizzas are served up straight from a traditional 800°F wood-burning oven in a restaurant that has a welcoming neighborhood feel to it. A fermented sourdough crust and award-winning Frate Sole extra virgin olive oil, procured from nearby Woodland, go into making the authentic thin-crust Neapolitan-style pizzas here. The Eileen (mozzarella, crimini mushrooms, bacon, cream, sage, and black pepper) and Gilda (mozzarella, fontina, olives, red onion, and a garlic, parsley, and anchovy persillade) are particular favorites.

The pizza competition has stiffened over the past few years in downtown, but Masullo offers a twist on traditional pizza, topping pies with anything from pestos to farm-fresh veggies, all using a chewy pizza dough that's unmatched. The setting is pretty chill, too, located just on the edge of Downtown in Land Park.

Bobby Masullo is an unabashed pizza purist and perfectionist, to the benefit of Sacramento residents’ taste buds. Flat-crust fans can basically pick at random from Masullo’s menu — maybe the rich Eileen’s cream and bacon strikes your fancy, or the dry heat of the Triana’s chorizo and chili oil — and walk away happy without feeling overly stuffed thanks to the restaurant’s meticulously crafted dough from a years-old mother. Demand has been high since Phoenix pizza maestro Chris Bianco anointed Masullo one of the best pizzaiolos nationwide in 2012, and Bobby spent much of winter 2019 expanding to fit more seats and a semi-private event space.

Masullo is an “elevated” pizza place that offers outdoor seating where you can enjoy your favorite Italian dishes. Most of the pizzas are Neapolitan-style pizzas, but you have the option of ordering a “tomato sauce-free” pizza (vegetarian and vegan options available). In addition to pizzas, they have appetizers such as sauteed almonds with rosemary, pasta dishes, and a wide range of desserts and drinks, such as beer, wine, iced tea, and soft drinks.

This pizzeria feels like a hidden wonder at its tucked away location in Land Park, but its perfect crust is no secret. Thin and fire-blistered, chewy but not doughy, chef-owner Robert Masullo knows how to make a crust that elevates the craft. Toppings lean on the gourmet side with offerings like arugula, oyster mushrooms and an herby anchovy persillade, but the finest bites are any pie’s remnant crust pieces, drizzled with chili oil.

A mid-century brick building located in Land Park next to a smog shop and across from the Old City Cemetery was, in Robert Masullo’s eyes, the perfect place to sling pies. He grew up in the neighborhood, after all. So in 2008 he renovated the former Chinese noodle factory with a crisp and modern aesthetic that derives warmth from long wood tables and a communal M.O.

Back-track to K and 20th Street for lunch at Pizzeria Urbano, which has delicious pizza (available by the slice), paninis and salads. There are many other restaurants here in the so-called “MARRS” (“Midtown Arts Restaurants Retail Scene”) area if pizza isn’t your thing.

Masullo is a gorgeous building that’s just about always packed, and for good reason. They’re another farm-to-table, from-scratch joint that serves up fantastic Italian meals — and yes, that includes pizza. While pizza isn’t the only game at Masullo, it is noteworthy.

Pizzas like you’ve never seen before— vegan options, and an entire section of the menu devoted to pizza without tomato sauce!. You’ll definitely want to try the unique pizzas served at Masullo!. This is the place to go for both classic and vegan pizza!
