Reviews Summary
Akar is praised for its innovative Malaysian fusion cuisine, creative cocktails, and a cozy, stylish ambiance that makes for a great evening out. Many diners highlight unique dishes and excellent service, though some find certain dishes mediocre or overpriced, and a few have experienced initial unwelcoming service.
"Came here on a rainy Tuesday evening for dinner with a friend and could not have been more pleased! Without a reservation, we were seated immediately. They have the coziest booths nestled in a modern open design layout. We ordered the gnocchi, popcorn chicken, rangoon ravioli, and asparagus risotto. All of them were absolutely delicious! Flavorful, cooked perfectly, and came out quickly. The restaurant is clean and well kept and the staff are attentive and very knowledgeable about menu items. I am looking forward to returning so I can try the duck breast and shrimp PKM!"

"We did an early Friday night dinner here since we had heard so much about it. Our initial introduction was quite awkward and unwelcoming. It set the tone for a dinner that made us feel like we were a bother.
Upon walking in one of the servers asked if we had a reservation to which we answered no. She then asked if we preferred to be seated inside or outside. We stated outside and she invited us to sit anywhere we pleased. We sat at a table for four (two small tables put together) since my husband and I like sitting next to each other. Less than 2 minutes after sitting, a man who we now know is chef B. Lee, came over and asked if anyone else was joining us. We answered no and he said we needed to move to another table (other 4 seaters) or he would take one of the tables away and make it a 2 seater. We moved but it was just the strangest thing because 15 minutes later another couple was seated there.
The server was polite and kind, the food decent. I loved the blue crab donabe. The fried chicken appetizer was fine but the soba noodle was described to have a peanut sauce and we could not find that flavour. It was pretty bland. My husband thought his lamb was decent. In addition to my initial grievance, I noticed the chef routinely delivering dishes to all other tables and conversing with them but not ours. It was odd and felt like we were not welcome.
Overall not sure I’ll return since food is only part of the experience. The service, especially from the chef, was disappointing and I urge him to do better. Happy to spend any amount of money an artist assigns as a value to their craft but there are expectations the higher the price tag."

"I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the wait staff. The drinks were unique. The one i had, serai, was very good. I lived the addition of black pepper on the rim. The pickled cabbage is hands down the best I've ever had. I would order that by the bucket! The other two meals i had were mediocre.
The crispy chicken was fine. But the chicken itself was under seasoned and the breading was too much. It distracted from the amazing herbs and glaze. The breading was initially crispy but began falling off. Id have preferred a lighter maybe cornmeal breading or none at all with a crispy skin.
The scallop dish was mediocre as well. Everything was good until i got to the orzo pasta. Pasta was not necessary. It was very starchy/floury? The dish would have made a great appetizer if the lobster curry was lessened and the orzo removed. The mango/scallop pairing was great!
The olive oil cake for dessert was very pleasant. Not too sweet. There was a lingering bitterness though but it isn't ruin the experience. Overall I'd try it again but try other dishes to see if the more traditional Malaysian foods are better."

A Food Lover's Guide to St. Louis County
Bernie Lee's intimate Akar(7641 Wydown Blvd, Clayton, 314-553-9914) is a deeply personal restaurant — one that explores the chef's roots going all the way back to his childhood in Malaysia. With a stunning interior space that seats only 14 (there's room for more on the lovely patio as weather permits), Lee is able to treat Akar like a dinner party in his own home, which means he can do what he wants just because he wants to do it. That means true fusion, with offerings such oolong tea-brined duck breast and char siu chicken joined by lobster rangoon ravioli and gnocchi in Malaysian curry.
Ian Froeb's STL 100: Our critic's 2022 guide to the best restaurants in St. Louis
I have been writing about Bernie Lee’s cooking for more than a decade now, beginning with his Delmar Loop sushi restaurant and izakaya Hiro, but I suspect I have completed only the opening chapters. Lee followed his original Hiro with the more expansive — and more compelling — Hiro Asian Kitchen in downtown west. The menu there moved with confidence among the cuisines of Malaysia, Japan, Vietnam, China and Thailand, but even that five-time STL 100 honoree was merely a prologue to Akar, which Lee debuted in 2019 in Clayton.

This first come, first serve patio will allow you to enjoy chef Bernie Lee’s menu of Malaysian comfort food three seasons out of the year. With plenty of greenery and heaters for the nights when things get a little too chilly, it’s a great atmosphere to enjoy a plate of vegetarian mapo tofu made with mushroom “mincemeat” or a plate of tamarind pork ribs.
