Reviews Summary
Blues City Deli is a highly-rated sandwich shop known for its creative and delicious sandwiches made with fresh ingredients. Diners rave about the friendly and fast service, as well as the vibrant blues-themed atmosphere. While most reviews are overwhelmingly positive, some minor critiques include the occasional over-toasted bread or confusion about specific sandwich preparations.
"My boyfriend and I were in town to watch the San Diego Padres play and stopped by for lunch at Blues City Deli. We were immediately greeted by Vince who noticed my boyfriend’s jersey and was super welcoming. I ordered the 7th St. Sicilian and Vince recommended the Creole Deluxe for my boyfriend. Both sandwiches were delicious and you could tell all the ingredients were fresh - Vince made a fantastic recommendation with the Creole Deluxe as the meat was juicy and cooked to perfection with a creole-mayo that really made the sandwich stand out. The service was 10/10 - our food came out fast, multiple people checked on us even though they were busy, and even Vince came out to see how we were doing. The atmosphere was also great - the walls are covered in blues memorabilia while blues music plays in the background. You can clearly tell that this place is beloved by locals and there’s no questions why. We had a great experience at Blues City Deli and we’ll definitely be back next time we’re in town. And extra thanks to Vince who was so nice and welcoming!"

"I've had BCD on my list of places to eat for a loooong time but the hours have restricted me from getting there until today. The line was wrapped around the building but the service was really quick, efficient, and friendly.
We got a pastrami Reuben and Thunderbird. Both sandwiches were really good overall but I was left with a bit of confusion. First on the Thunderbird. I expected it to be hot but it wasn't, which was almost certainly my mistake. But the bread was hard and crunchy like it was meant to have been toasted. Weird. Second, the pastrami Reuben really tasted like a standard corned beef Reuben. To become pastrami it needs to be smoked and typically re-seasoned which will give it a dark crust or bark. I didn't get either of those things. So for me I can't consider that pastrami.
Again it's a really good local place and my expectations were quite high. But I don't think the sandwiches were executed exactly right."

"Went here for a date day with my fiancé and we absolutely loved it. The service was great. Staff was very friendly. Sandwiches came out quick. The thunderbird is a MUST try. Only thing was the bread was just a little too toasted for my taste, on the harder side . We also tired the almond joy cookie. One of the best cookies I’ve had in my life. We shall surely be back!"

Another welcome sight during these two fraught years: the line to order at Blues City Deli once again snaking out the front door, around the corner and down the block. What draws a crowd to Vinnie Valenza’s corner of Benton Park is no mystery — sandwiches, great and big — and Blues City has been a mainstay of this list since its inaugural edition. But given the number and variety of sandwiches I have eaten during the pandemic (many and many, respectively), I did ponder what sets Blues City apart.

Blues City Deli uses Vitale’s Bakery bread for its amazing muffaletta, with a thick, spongy, focaccia-like bun that’s studded with seeds. It holds everything together, including that fragrant, glossy olive salad. Ham, mortadella, Genoa salami, and Provolone make for a splendid two-napkin, two-person meal.
