"Stopped by PV Deli, eager to support a local business and try one of their subs. I’m all for extravagant creations, but I was in the mood for something a bit simpler. So, I kindly asked the cashier if it was okay to swap a few ingredients – a little less meat, a little more of what I actually like – and he said, “Of course!” Great. Off to a promising start.

As my sub (chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado, pesto, onion) was being finished, they kindly double-checked if I wanted onions. I said yes, and, seeing some tempting pickles, politely asked if I could add one as well. That’s when the tone shifted.

An elderly man in the back seized the moment to put me in my place. He announced to the whole shop that I was “the most difficult customer of all time” and that it was a “good thing” I came in during the morning so they could “get their most difficult customer out of the way.” He scolded me, saying that my order is making his and his workers lives so much harder.

As I stood there at a loss for words, he added, “Don’t take anything I say too seriously, sweetheart. They call me the Sandwich Nazi for a reason.”

I awkwardly replied, “Next time, I’ll just make my sandwich at home,” hoping that would end it. But no – he continued, reminiscing about his time at my workplace, adding another layer of awkwardness to an already surreal situation.

So, to the team at PV Deli, I genuinely wish you well. I love supporting local businesses – just not ones where I end up as the unwilling participant in a condescending comedy routine. And as for that elderly gentleman, I truly hope he’s doing okay. I’d hate to think a simple pickle request could rattle someone that much. I hope he treats his coworkers with a lot more respect than he did me."
