Why we love it: This bakery and bistro serves a mouthwatering selection of colorful macarons, cookies, scones, muffins and other baked goods, including a selection of gluten-free treats. If you’re more of a savory person, options like fresh salads and sandwiches, including a grilled cheese with gruyere and goat cheese, are great options.

Start with lunch at La Gloria, chef Johnny Hernandez’s nod to interior Mexico, followed by dessert at Bakery Lorraine, where you’ll find an enticing rainbow of Parisian-style macarons. If you’re in the mood to shop, pick up a tailored guayabera from Dos Carolinas, or a piece of handcrafted jewelry from Ten Thousand Villages. Pearl Brewery is even home to Hotel Emma, a true gem in San Antonio’s boutique-lodging scene, in case you don’t want to leave.

Here expertly crafted croissants, cookies, muffins, macarons, rolls, tarts, and danish pastries are as delicious as they come. Heartier breakfast fare includes quiche lorraine, and seasonal French toast, while lunch features Cuban roast pork loin sandwiches and other sandwich options on their homemade breads. Some alumni have opened restaurants with a range of price points right in the Pearl district, like six-time James Beard Award finalist Chef Steve McHugh’s restaurant Cured. James Beard-nominated Chef Nicola Blaque has Freight Fried Chicken at the Pearl and The Jerk Shack on the west side of the city. Chef Susan Rigg’s award-winning River Whey Creamery cheeses are served at numerous Pearl restaurants and available for sale at Pullman Market at the Pearl and at the Pearl's Winter Holiday Night Markets.

There is absolutely no surprise that the city’s best bakery is also on the list of best outdoor dining in San Antonio. Their location downtown at the Pearl has a great patio overlooking the center common area where you can tuck in under an umbrella with your morning croissant and watch the world go by. Other favorites are the kouign amann, sea salt chocolate donut (Saturdays), and the cinnamon rolls.

Bakery Lorraine started out as a hole in the wall on Grayson street. Now at the Pearl Brewery in a much larger, more upscale location, they have earned a reputation as the cafe to go for the most delicious sandwiches and pastries. Every Texan with an Instagram has probably seen Bakery Lorraine’s macarons, and they are as good as they look. Showstopping though those jewel-like cookies may be, first-time visitors should dive deeper into the pastry case to find flaky koiugn-amann, never-dry muffins, and buttery cinnamon rolls. My pick for the best spot for indulging a sweet tooth, Bakery Lorraine is always packed and serves up sinful macarons and French-style pastries. It's located at the Historic Pearl Plaza, so I love to visit after browsing the nearby bookstore.
