What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mixtli is celebrated for its exceptional fine dining experience, offering meticulously presented, regionally inspired Mexican cuisine and outstanding service. While many praise the creative dishes, storytelling, and unique cocktails, some diners found certain dishes overly complicated or lacking in flavor, and one review mentioned a hygiene concern in the kitchen. Despite minor critiques, the overall consensus points to a memorable and highly recommended culinary adventure.
"Mixtli is truly in a league of its own. We brought family here while they were visiting, and it was the highlight of their trip—and ours. My wife and I have always loved this restaurant, but every visit somehow raises the bar even higher. Each dish on the tasting menu is a masterclass in flavor, storytelling, and cultural heritage.
What really sets Mixtli apart is the passion and knowledge of the entire team. From the moment you walk in, you're treated like a guest of honor. The staff—hosts, servers, and chefs—are all incredibly well-versed in the ingredients, techniques, and the regional history behind each course. It's not just dinner—it's an experience that connects you to the soul of Mexican cuisine.
This isn’t just a place to eat. It’s where you go to be inspired by food. If you're looking for a culinary experience that’s thoughtful, elevated, and unforgettable—Mixtli is it."

"I’ve been fortunate to be able to eat at so many great restaurants throughout my life but Mixtli was the best overall experience I’ve ever had! Everyone in staff was so wonderful and the stories behind each dish and each cocktail is incredible! The lady who was in charge of the wine was especially great with perfect wine pairings from the reserve pairing option.
My wife is a vegetarian but every single course was created for her so that it was essentially the same as mine but with a substitution for the meat which was special because we were able to essentially experience the same thing which is unheard of!
This is a must visit restaurant because it’s a once in a lifetime experience that couldn’t be done better in any way!!
Thank you for such a wonderful evening!!"

"The food was exquisite, the bread plate was divine, it was wonderfully inventive that I wanted more! The service was great as well, everything was so well maintained, it was hard to find fault. I want to rate them 4.5 stars, or 4.8…. However, there was one thing that was questionable which wouldn’t allow me give 5 stars. After we ate, we went next door to the bar, and watched the chefs prepare food while we had a drink and one kept touching his hair and touching the food. He would run his fingers through his hair and then roll out tortillas. Run his fingers through his hair, and then plate food. That’s the only reason I didn’t give 5 stars. Everything else, immaculate!"

15 Best Restaurants in San Antonio to Try Right Now (2025)
What it is: An innovative restaurant serving regional Mexican tasting menus and the only restaurant in San Antonio to have received a Michelin Star. Why we love it: Dining at Mixtli, which is the spoken Aztec word for “cloud,” is like traveling to different places and time periods. Operating under the premise that Mexican food can’t be defined because of Mexico's vast diversity, Mixtili challenges your preconceived notions about what Mexican food is.
San Antonio's best restaurants in 2022
No single restaurant made a bigger transition during the pandemic than Mixtli, the modernist Mexican restaurant that ranked No. 1 on 2019’s list. Chefs and owners Rico Torres and Diego Galicia closed their original location in a 12-seat boxcar near Olmos Park in 2020 and reopened Mixtli last summer in a Southtown restaurant space with room for a cocktail bar and more than triple the capacity, affording the luxury of multiple seatings rather than one communal service a night. While Mixtli lost some of its intimacy and storytelling spark in the move, it preserved the same attention to detail and creative flair, with dishes like scallops presented with coconut foam and dry-ice, a radiant shrimp tamal and chopped mussels on squid ink masa.
11 Best Mexican Restaurants in San Antonio
Mixtli, the best Mexican restaurant in San Antonio, is unique, in that its quarterly menu focuses on the past and present of a selected region of Mexico and the flavors and ingredients that derived over the years from that area. This results in an animated 10-course, prix fixe menu that serves up an extensive history of flavor, dish origins, and ingredients that will leave you with a newfound knowledge of Mexico and have you questioning if you ever really knew anything about Mexican food at all. Its current menu, focusing on the Puebla region, boasts four different and intricate mole sauces, black bean garlic soup with frothed Guayanés cheese, poblano sorbet, and the most tender beef tongue shrouded in mesquite smoke.
Top 10 San Antonio Bars
Speaking of Michelin, Mixtli (an Aztec word for cloud) holds the city’s only coveted star after the guide’s inaugural foray into Texas cuisine in 2024. While spots for dinner fill up quickly, the bar is the best way to glimpse into the world of Mixtli without a reservation. Bar director Lauren Beckman has built a creative program filled with historical references, like the spruce air foam atop the Ponderosa Rivers cocktail which represents the aromas Mexican forces may have smelled while standing beneath the pine trees for shade in Northern California during the Mexican-American war.
