Here, the seasonal menu ranges from crispy fried half-chicken with coffee-crusted bacon and thyme red-eye gravy to Gulf red snapper with charred tomato sauce piquant and pickled fennel salad. Housed in a historic building that was once Pearl’s Brewhouse, Southerleigh also references its past with an on-site brewery and nearly two dozen beers on tap.

Galveston chef-owner Jeff Balfour offers Southern comfort cuisine for lunch, brunch, and dinner, accompanied by draft beers brewed on-site in a custom brewery by Portland Kettle Works, reviving the tradition of brewing at the Pearl. The menu usually includes Southerleigh's famous fried chicken, deviled eggs, and Galveston Bay shrimp boil. Their weekend brunch features appetizers and breakfast plates of malted Belgian waffle and crab mac 'n' cheese.

It’s time to move beyond the idea that all Texas oysters belong in that big tub we call “Gulf oysters.” Southerleigh chef Aaron Juvera is doing exactly that at this newest member of the Michelin Bib Gourmand club by forging relationships with Texas producers whose oysters can match their East Coast rivals for brine, for sweetness and for the ethereal nuances of the sea. Founder Jeff Balfour’s flagship restaurant made its name with fried chicken, house-brewed beer and a curiosity called snapper throats with a crunch like seafood’s answer to chicken wings. Juvera’s building on that foundation with braised Nilgai antelope from the land and seafood specials that might include pan-seared grouper with apple chutney or a cracker-crusted Gulf redfish.

Southerleigh caught the oyster wave early, bringing its outdoor oyster bar to the Pearl in 2018 to complement an already strong lineup of Gulf and East Coast oysters. Made from recycled steel and milk glass windows from old Pearl buildings, the oyster bar draws a long line for draft beer in the daytime and starts shucking oysters around dinnertime. Southerleigh doesn’t carry quite the laundry list of oyster varieties as other places, but I got beautiful, fresh Foxley River and Savage Blonde oysters from Prince Edward Island and robust Blish Point oysters from Massachusetts ($3.50 to $4 each).

Comfort food and ice-cold beer are always a classic combination. At Southerleigh Fine Foods & Brewery, brewers craft multiple styles of beer, several of which tap into the German influences of the Texas Hill Country region. Southerleigh “is a great place to visit if you’re coming to San Antonio,” Aldaco says.

While we were only able to try their in-between menu (a short menu available between lunch and dinner service), we really enjoyed our time at Southerleigh. The inside of the building is really cool because you can see the old building mixed with the new. You can try their many beers with a beer flight.

The full chef lineup is still under wraps, but a press release lets us know it'll include Southerleigh Fine Foods' Jeff Balfour and Meadow Neighborhood Eatery's PJ Edwards. They might come up with something new, but what customers love in the restaurant certainly ain't broke and might not need fixing.

Southerleigh Fine Food and Brewery is best known for its beer, but it has so much more to offer. If you’re in the Pearl area, you’ve got to try their East Coast oysters, which rotates on a daily basis so diners get the freshest catch possible. By the way, the Cajun Caviar & Fries is the perfect abomination to accompany raw oysters on the half shell, so treat yourself a little, hm?

South of downtown along the River Walk’s Mission Reach is the Blue Star Brewing Company. The beers are the main draw here (try the Cinco Peso Pale Ale or Belgian-style King William Ale), but the food is also commendable, including the brisket tacos and Frito pie.

Supper at the Hotel Emma is an American bistro with an open kitchen, bar seating, and a wonderful patio with a view of the San Antonio Riverwalk. For the first course, I had the coconut and cauliflower soup with turmeric — creamy, light, and delicious.

Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery serves southern-style comfort food, and the brunch is unbeatable. Think frozen mimosas and biscuits and gravy. Plus, you can't beat the flight of beers crafted at Southerleigh's microbrewery right upstairs.

My favorite restaurant and the last we went to was Southerleigh, also located at the Pearl. Almost everything I tasted was good and the hospitality was top-tier. It doubles as a fine food restaurant and brewery, which I thought was cool.

Mom-Approved: Savory comfort food in the heart of the historic Pearl property; a lively patio is great for early evening gatherings. Bonus: kids are given fresh dough to form and bake their own pretzel for an appetizer – so fun!

Southerleigh – Their outdoor seating is the absolute best people watching at the Pearl. They have umbrellas which help during the summer. I prefer their outdoor bar, which is small, making it more intimate.
