Reviews Summary

Angler is celebrated for its exceptional wood-fired seafood, refined lodge-like ambiance with bay views, and impeccable service. Diners rave about unique dishes and the overall dining experience, though some have reported issues with freshness and service inconsistencies, alongside unexpected mandatory fees. Despite these concerns, many find it to be a special occasion destination.

"Celebrated my birthday at Angler this year, and my brother and I had a great time. It was his first experience at a Michelin-starred restaurant, and he really enjoyed it. Christian and the team were so hospitable and attentive—it truly made the night memorable, and I’ll definitely be back. I was also happy to learn that for dessert, they were able to make a smaller version of the sundae since I knew I wouldn’t be able to finish a full one.

Standouts: Hand-Dived Scallop, Grilled Sea Bream, Radicchio, and the Sundae."

Karina S

"Delightful lunch in the city: oysters, cajun frog legs, sea bream, and hen of the woods mushrooms.

Oysters, sea bream, and mushrooms were my a favorite and I enjoyed the frog legs as my "first time trying".

Service was exceptional. The lunch atmosphere was enjoyable, busy but not too loud, and we had a nice seat near a window.

The price fixed lunch is a great deal given the quality and great for a business meeting over delicious food."

Maxwell Smith

"I went to Angler on Saturday afternoon for a birthday brunch for my mother, and it was absolutely incredible. The interior is stunning with the roaring fire hearth and those gorgeous views of the San Francisco Bay — such a perfect setting for a celebration.
The service was fantastic — swift, kind, and so attentive without ever feeling rushed. We started with the dry-aged crudo, which was bright, refreshing, and the perfect way to kick off the meal. The buns with seaweed butter are an absolute must-try — soft, buttery, salty, and just ridiculously good.
We ordered a wide selection of sides, and a couple of standouts for me were the leeks with macadamia and the hen of the woods mushroom — both packed with flavor and beautifully prepared. And, of course, we couldn’t leave without trying the famous soft serve, which was the perfect sweet, light finish.
Angler made the afternoon feel really special. I can’t recommend it enough if you’re looking for an unforgettable meal in SF."

Best Seafood Restaurants in San Francisco: All-Time Favorite Seafood Spots

Chef Joshua Skenes (previously the chef at Saison) is the driving force behind this “sea-life focused” restaurant on the Embarcadero, much of which is cooked over the star of the restaurant, a 32-foot-long hearth and wood-fire grill. Absolutely order something from that section of the menu, but don’t skip the bivalves straight from the tank. (Or the parker house rolls with cultured seaweed butter.) The space is impressive—two dining rooms, both with sweeping views of the Bay Bridge and impeccable decor, so much so that you’ll figure out right when you walk in that you’re going to walk out substantially poorer (but also completely satisfied).

The Best Places To Eat In The Financial District - San Francisco

This offshoot of Saison can get expensive (around $100 per person), but they serve some of the most creative and delicious seafood in the city. (Seriously, when was the last time you had salt-and-pepper blowfish tails or tuna tartare with tomato jelly?) Angler’s pretty heavy on the we-need-to-impress-some-clients crowd (it is on Embarcadero, after all), and this bright, lively place - with service that rivals the kind bestowed to King Louis XIV - is great for celebratory group dinners or dates with cocktails and small plates.

Expectations were high when Saison’s Michelin-starred chef announced he was opening a more casual restaurant, but Angler does not disappoint. The waterfront restaurant’s land-and-sea theme is evident in everything from the taxidermy-lined walls to the kitchen’s open flame grill, which churns out grilled rabbit and a beautiful 28oz bone-in porterhouse steak. Don’t forget to try raw bar delicacies like antelope tartar and caviar spread on Parker House rolls.

Bay Bridge views, dark wood, brick walls, and modern lighting set the tone for Angler, a buzzy spot serving some of the best modern seafood in San Francisco. The microclimate-oriented menu, using ingredients sourced directly from local fishermen and gatherers. A surf-and-turf raw bar features items unlikely found elsewhere in the city (or any other city for that matter) like purple sea urchin and antelope tartare.

The Best Restaurants In San Francisco

This ‘casual’ Saison spinoff from Chef Joshua Skenes has received a ton of media attention since it opened in late 2018. The good news is that in terms of space, service and food, Angler lives up to the hype. Though the name inspires visions of fishing, the self-proclaimed ‘sea life-focused’ restaurant also excels in the areas of hunting, ranching and gathering.

The 16 Best Seafood Restaurants In San Francisco

Easily the most stylish new SF restaurant of the last year, Angler is the predictably delicious offspring of Saison co-owners Mark Bright and chef Joshua Skenes. And now that Skenes is no longer in the kitchen at Saison, fans can still find his love for live-fire cooking and his talents for teasing out flavors and showcasing fresh seafood in full effect here. The menu features some baller options like a $165 caviar service, but some of the simplest dishes are the best, including a grilled head of radicchio doused in a "X.O." sauce made from radicchio, and a whole Petrale sole served with smoked butter.

New places to eat in the Bay Area

Possibly the blockbuster restaurant of 2018 San Francisco, Angler is every bit as dialed in as your Instagram feed makes it look. It’s showy, with a 32-foot hearth blaring in the kitchen, one room full of pristine live-fish tanks and another studded with gargantuan taxidermy, but the precise, no-fish-bone-out-of-place style of cooking and service is fully realized. A warning: Though often touted by media as ultra-pricey Saison’s more casual sibling, Angler is still very expensive, and reservations are hard to get, and the servers are wearing suits.
