What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Californios is celebrated for its groundbreaking Mexican tasting menus, consistently earning praise for creative dishes, exceptional service, and impressive beverage pairings. While the experience is often described as world-class and memorable, some diners note that the pacing can occasionally feel rushed, and the price point is considered very high, making it a destination for very special occasions.
"One of the best dining experiences I have ever had and truly the best end to end in San Francisco. From food to service and beware pairings, this restaurant deserves all the recognition it has received and more. Highly recommend for a special occasion or if you appreciate true service. What they have built is truly special and I cannot wait to return. The wine program is truly phenomenal - so we did one pairing and also ordered cocktails so we could try everything. I also want to add that it’s a fun environment to be in which makes it way more enjoyable than some of the other Michelin restaurants."

"Simply phenomenal and certainly the best tortillas I have ever had in my entire life. All the dishes were absolutely stellar — not a single note. Although the cocktails were delicious, I did find them to be that interesting — they all felt very safe; would have liked to see more creativity like all their food dishes. My only slight con was the food pacing was so good at the start but by the last 2-3 courses before dessert, the space between courses felt a bit too long. But, this is truly nit picking."

"We visited Californios for dinner on a weekday for a special occasion. Start to finish, the experience was the most fabulous I've had at a fine dining restaurant.
While we waited for our table, we visited the bar and ordered drinks. The staff took good care of us due to the wait time.
The meal was divine. You can taste the freshness in every bite. The flavor was bursting in every bite. It was well balanced from the notes in each course and built up quite beautifully.
The atmosphere was inviting and upbeat. Ambiance is perfect for all occasions. It was a fun environment.
By the time we got to dessert, I had to force myself to eat and could not turn it down given how great each and every menu item was.
I would recommend Californios and I will definitely be back without having to wait for a special event."

Best Mexican Restaurants in San Francisco: Good Places to Order From Now
After a brief closure, this two-Michelin-starred fine dining Mexican restaurant reopened last spring in a much larger space in SoMa with indoor and outdoor seating. The tasting menu continues to be ambitious and unlike anything you imagine of when you think of “Mexican food” though it is very much just that—chef Cantu takes Mexican ingredients and techniques to new levels while also highlighting the Bay Area’s seasonal bounty. You never know what you’re going to get as the tasting menu changes nightly, but you can expect a meal with exquisite presentation, service, and food.

This Californian-Mexican tasting-menu concept by chef Val M. Cantu continues to be one of the hottest tickets in the entire Bay Area. Cantu and his team's creations, along with Charlotte Randolph's acclaimed wine program, remain as special as ever (the restaurant had a great run in smaller Mission District digs before moving to SoMa), crafting what is possibly the country's leading Mexican-influenced fine dining experience. As wonderful as what's on the table is, the posh black-walled setting with contemporary art and dramatic chandeliers is just as notable.

It’ll start with tiny bites, like a masa tart topped with rich sturgeon mousse and caviar and a chicharrón buried in truffle shavings, and head into an entire course dedicated to some of the best tacos we’ve ever had. It ends with a trio of bonbons, a buñuelo you’ll dream about for weeks, and chocolate cotton candy.

A complex, layered mole here isn’t just likely to please—it’s bound to turn your entire understanding of this nation’s cuisine on its head. The luxurious space only ups the appeal.

Quiet Bay Area spots to eat
In his tiny, handsome restaurant, with just 24 seats and a single tasting menu, chef Val Cantu conjures up his own idiosyncratic world: Meso-American cuisine, both precolonial and postmodern. This is a restaurant where I’d take anyone from anywhere else, to have them taste what can only be tasted here, now.
