Consider Off-Peak Hours

Visit during less busy times for potentially better service and a more relaxed experience.

Flour + Water Pizzeria is tossing out some of the best slices in SF — and they’re doing it with serious craft 🍕🔥 They’re making 300+ pounds of dough daily, loading up pies with Calabrian chili, garlic, sundried tomatoes, and finishing it with a perfect burrata drop. Every detail is dialed, every slice feels personal, and every bite reminds you why this spot stays packed. Sorry Pat, but that slice...

Reviews Summary

Flour + Water is celebrated for its exceptional, innovative pasta dishes and high-quality wood-fired pizzas, often described as a top-tier culinary experience. While many praise the attentive service and delightful flavors, some diners have noted inconsistencies in service attentiveness and occasional issues with music volume or the dining room's temperature.

"Tasting menu was a good choice. Reservations for Flour+Water are hard to come by, but setting up an alert to notify for last minute/day of/before openings does work. They were able to accommodate my allergy and the substitute dish was one of my favorites of the night! Every course was definitely delicious and worth trying."

Pam V.

"So I did not actually eat here. I ordered it through DoorDash or whatever service. That’s a lie, my mom ordered it for me. I cannot comment on their service or environment but I’m sure it is pretty good. I liked the wings. They had a great sauce on them and cooked well. I also liked the pizza. We got three pizzas and all were great. The dough is really good and the pizza is prepared how I usually like my pizza. That is thin but then a crunchy and thicker crust. Toppings and pizza was good. I’m pretty sure they do pasta as well which I should have tried. I like Italian food so I might be a bit bias towards this one. Anyways, solid place. I’m writing this a day later so I’m trying my best to remember. I am sitting outside a Thai place so we’ll see how this goes. Great food."

Alex Yang

"Went for a birthday party and was pleasantly surprised at how full I got because everything was so good and I kept wanting to eat more pasta until I couldn’t. Food was paired with wine for a lil extra but well worth it. Staff was very attentive and kept the meals coming! Would recommend this place for sure!"

Restaurants in San Francisco

This handsome and boisterous hot spot with a tiny bar and a sleek yet rustic dining room is synonymous with pasta. The grand experience here is the seven-course pasta-tasting menu (extra charge for wine pairings) with seasonally changing dishes (the one standby is a meatless Taleggio scarpinocc with aged balsamic drizzled over the bow tie–shaped pasta). It also serve top-notch, blistery thin-crust Neapolitan pizzas.

The 25 Best Restaurants In SF - San Francisco

If a Pasta Hall of Fame existed, Flour + Water would be its forever MVP. That’s because the city’s most iconic Cal-Ital restaurant (est. 2009) makes pastas out of ingredient combinations you’ve probably never seen before (much less thought to put on a pasta dish), and pulls them off with flair. Think veal tortellini with horseradish, corn-and-cheese-stuffed pasta topped with mint, and cocoa and rutabaga casoncelli.

Best Pizza in San Francisco

Flour + Water is an open, airy, corner restaurant that's been bustling since the day it opened. The substantial bar is inviting, as are the sidewalk tables. You'll peep at every table, trying to figure out which pizza they ordered—and each one you see looks more appealing than the last.

The San Francisco Chronicle

Best Italian food and restaurants in SF Bay Area

When Flour + Water opened 15 years ago, Michael Bauer, then the restaurant critic for the Chronicle, gave it a glowing review despite its location, which he said was “a bit out of the way.” No one would describe the intersection of 20th and Harrison as such anymore, and while this corner restaurant can’t be held solely responsible for the neighborhood’s development, it has spawned a mini restaurant empire that includes Penny Roma (also on our list), Trick Dog (of which it’s a part owner) and dedicated pasta shop. But the original Flour + Water is still the confident matriarch of the family. If you’re seated at the communal table in the bar area, you’ll have an unobstructed view of the roaring pizza oven (pizzas are around $26) and a cook meditatively stretching dough to feed into its fiery maw.

The 20 Best Pizza Places in San Francisco

Known more, overall, for their pasta, Flour + Water has made Neapolitan-style pizzas of varying quality since the Mission restaurant's debut ten years ago — initially under the helm of Del Popolo founder Jon Darsky, who broke off to do his own thing a couple years in. The pizza at the flagship remains a high point, with thin, crisp crusts, well blistered edges, and frequently delicious seasonal topping combinations. But now the team has upped the ante with their 18th and Valencia pizzeria, where the gas-oven-fired pizzas are just as great — with an emphasis on East Coast-style red-sauce Italian flare, and optional ranch dipping sauce.

Mission-Potrero favorite Flour + Water roared back to life after a pandemic hiatus with a new look and a return to its regional Italian roots. Their pasta tasting menu is a delightful romp through the restaurant’s handmade noodles, which range from classic spaghetti (made with seaweed and paired with fennel, pickled sea lettuce, negi onion, and Calabrian chili) to pillow-shaped agnolotti (with black trumpet and porcini mushrooms, smoked celery root, and rosemary). The meat-free version ($125/person) includes nine savory dishes driven by seasonal California produce and a rich dark chocolate budino for dessert.
