Reviews Summary

La Taqueria is celebrated for its exceptional, rice-free burritos and flavorful tacos, often hailed as some of the best in San Francisco. Diners praise the fresh ingredients and unique taste. However, some customers experience long wait times and occasional service issues, with a few finding the food underwhelming or bland.

"This place was great. This was the first time me and my wife has been here and we got to tell you this is going to be our new favorite spot when we visit San Francisco. We had the super burrito fried the proportion sizes is not that large but it is worth every bit of the money. There was a pretty big line but trust me don't let that scare you away it goes really fast. The inside is pretty small so it's hard to get a table so we just got to go and ate it at our car."

Ronald

"Honestly, I have to say this was a very underwhelming experience overall. The food itself? Absolutely five stars no question. The burrito I had was one of the best I’ve ever eaten in my life. So much flavor, perfectly made, and I loved that there was no rice just pure filling and taste. Truly incredible.

But the experience leading up to that was very disappointing. When we first got in line, they told us they were out of steak (which I understand since we got there about an hour and a half before closing). They said they still had carnitas, chicken, and chorizo. By the time we got to the counter, they were out of carnitas too, so I ordered two chicken items (a chicken burrito and a chicken quesadilla) plus one taco with chorizo. The lady confirmed my order and gave me a ticket.

Here’s the issue: we then had to wait almost an hour in line before finally getting our food. By the time it was our turn, we were among the last 10 people before closing, and then they suddenly told me they were out of chicken. After waiting that long, and after driving over an hour and a half just to come try this place, that was really frustrating. They offered to cancel the order, but by then I just ended up switching to chorizo, which was good, but not what I originally wanted.

So while the food itself is amazing no doubt worth five stars the overall experience was frustrating and left me disappointed. For that reason, I can only give three stars. I really hope I can come back and have a smoother, better experience next time, because the flavor is truly unbeatable."

Ariya Zaheri

"Best burrito I've ever had. (Chicken, but i heardsteak is the best.). Fresh, light, grilled, outer shell (flour tortilla), with fresh ingredients. I chose no rice. Chips, salsa, and guacamole were fantastic. My Mom had delicious pork tacos. Mariachi band too!"

Best Tacos In San Francisco

You’re going to have to wait in a long-ass line at La Taqueria (thanks a lot, Nate Silver), but the pain and frustration is well worth it when you’re diving face-first into the Carne Asada Super Taco Dorado. Burrito-eaters wax poetic on La Taqueria’s carnitas (and they are delicious), but for tacos, it’s all about the carne -- you’ll see the lightning-fast taco maker chopping the gorgeous, well-charred meat into submission right before he slaps a generous handful of the stuff into a waiting tortilla.

La Taqueria is to Mission-style burritos what "Jingle Bell Rock" is to songs that get stuck in our heads in the month of December: not necessarily our top pick, but an iconic standby nonetheless. Whether you’ve lived here all your life or visited once for exactly 72 hours, odds are high that you’ve spent a late Friday night in line on Mission Street in pursuit of a riceless burrito. La Taq has been doing its thing since the 1970s, and is more frequently associated with the city than Karl the Fog.

Since 1973, people have been lining up for the Jara family’s tightly wrapped burritos and tacos, and for good reason—they’re pfg. A few years ago I broke their secret menu, where it was revealed you can do all sorts of sneaky menu hacks like get your burrito dorado—it’s worth a read before a visit. But these days, my biggest protip is unsuspectingly hidden in plain sight right on the menu: get a carne asada corn quesadilla—a single corn tortilla is filled with cheese and charred meat and put on the plancha until melted—it’s basically a DIY quesataco.

10 Must-Try Spots For Street Food in San Francisco

The myriad of taquerias that flank Mission Street (and neighboring streets in and around the Mission) are not technically “street food” in that they offer inside seating, but Mission-style Mexican food is as close to an endemic San Francisco street food as you’re going to get. So we’d be remiss if we didn’t include it in a round-up of great Bay Area street food. You can’t lose by popping into nearly any Mexican spot in the Mission but La Taqueria has long been considered the best of the best.

The Best Burritos in San Francisco

Last fall, La Taqueria almost lost its landmark home of 46 years in a family dispute, a fate that, for many, would’ve felt like the last nail in the coffin for a gentrifying Mission. But then-almost-80-year-old owner Miguel Jara Sr., along with his sons, swooped in and bought the building, and “the world’s best burrito”—at least, according to the restaurant’s neon-lit sign—was saved. The back wall of the restaurant features dozens of framed accolades dating back decades.
