With a name like Tacolicious it’s clear that tacos are their thing. While you can go for classics like carne asada or Baja-style Pacific cod, the fan favorite here is the pastrami taco. It’s a taco version of a deli-style pastrami sandwich made with locally made pastrami, mustard manzano aioli, and caraway cabbage slaw on a soft flour tortilla.

It’s easy to get distracted at Tacolicious, what with things like filet mignon tacos and a Marina Girl salad (!!!!!!!!!!). But we keep coming back to one of the menu staples -- the Shot-and-a-Beer Braised Chicken. It’s a slow-cooked, guisado-style handheld bathed in a combination of beer and the hard stuff.

The delicious food, fun atmosphere, and serious margaritas will never disappoint. Located in the Mission, Tacolicious provides some of the best of the best tacos, small plates and, of course, tequila. Make sure to get here early as it gets packed, even on a weeknight.

We enjoy Marlowe, Perbacco, Skool, Tacolicious (several locations), R&G Lounge for Chinese, Tony's Napoletana for pizza, La Urbana, Cotogna, Delfina, and Locanda in the Mission.

If Mexican food is your thing, this dog friendly restaurant in SF has two branches, so whether you’re at one end of the city or the other, you’ve got the option to swing by with your pup for a plate of delicious, zesty tacos. But these days, they’ve been hitting the mark with generously portioned, well-seasoned tacos that include a wide range of fillings — from the always delicious saucy chicken tinga drizzled with crema to the spicy shrimp with morita-arbol salsa and habañero-pickled onions. Drinks are a Tacolicious specialty — the Mission location even has a tequila and mezcal bar called Mosto right next door. If you go with friends to either the Mission or Marina outpost, consider ordering a pitcher of the throat-tickling pasión margarita, a heady mix of tequila, haba n ñero, passion fruit, and citrus.

Although this is a local chain, the Marina location remains my favorite. It’s not just because I used to live within a few blocks from its old Chestnut location, but it’s also because they started hosting their very first Barklet Happy Hour every Wednesday with a special menu for dogs back in October 2021. While humans chomp on juicy tacos (mushroom “carnitas” to Baja-style Pacific Cod) and down some tequila shots, their furry dining companions can choose between two entrees: chopped sweet potato and chicken thigh OR unseasoned, veggie-fed, antibiotic-free ground beef.

Tacolicious started as a hot spot in the Marina, but has expanded to North Beach, Palo Alto, and is even finding success in the Mission. That’s in part because the menu is accessible to even the most novice eater, but also because pitchers of margaritas taste good from the first sip to the last drop. If you like spice, order the margarita picante with espolon blanco, lime, agave, and red chile shrub, though the margarita fresca with olmeca altos blanco, tangerine, thyme, agave, and lime is hard to resist on a warm afternoon.

First established in 2009 by a duo who felt the need to bring their food journey through Mexico back to the Bay Area, Tacolicious is undoubtedly one of the best restaurants of its kind in San Francisco. Tacolicious started as a simple stand at a Bay Area farmers market, but it didn’t take long for the owners to realize that the people of San Francisco were obsessed with the food it was serving up. Soon after, Tacolicious opened up its first storefront and has seen continuous growth throughout the community ever since.

What began as a small taco stand inspired by childhood trips to Mexico is now a chain of Tacolicious Mexican restaurants in the Bay Area and beyond. Upscale taqueria chain Tacolicious technically has three San Francisco locations, but you could also throw in their Mission District spin-offs like the tequila bar Mosto and sports bar Bar San Pancho. The cuisine is very creative and pretty healthy on the Mexican food spectrum, the salsa is minty, and your guacamole is made to order.

Oh sure, other places might have children’s menus but do theirs also fold up into a taco truck?. While it’s pretty much impossible to throw a stone and not hit an amazing Mexican restaurant in the city, almost all reviews point to Tacolicious and their three restaurants as the most kid friendly of them all. Reasonable prices, an accessible menu and top-notch flavors all contribute to the success of Tacolicious.

As traditional as Tacolicious may be when it comes to their options, some of their flavors are pretty unique.

This is a Valencia Street spot that’s popular with a younger crowd; it gets boisterous, especially around happy hour. Weekend brunch is also a scene. Over the years Tacolicious has become a Bay Area institution. There are three locations in the city and two in the South Bay. At every one, hungry diners dig into Tex-Mex-inspired queso, made-to-order guacamole, and an assortment of finger-licking good tacos.

But it’s one of the first places I truly loved in the city when I moved here. I remember when the first one opened, then the second, and now the empire that has spanned from SF down the peninsula. Chapeau, it’s a solid meal.

Happy hour/Taco Tuesday are where it’s at when coming to Tacolicious. Margarita’s are basically free at $7 and the chips and salsa are flowing. On the taco front, the fish (fried or grilled) and fried avocado can’t be beat.
