If you want something very casual, Roxie's Food Center offers tasty and filling deli sandwiches in a canteen setting.

The number of dim sum spots with cart service is dwindling, but Yank Sing is keeping the tradition alive. We like the Spear Street location better than its Stevenson counterpart—it’s got a bigger menu, and the Rincon Center atrium lets in tons of natural light. On any given morning, you’ll see just as many tourists as there are entire extended families squished around the big round tables, each loading up on xiao long bao, turnip cakes, and mounds of broccoli with oyster sauce from roving carts.

It can get hectic in here with the zigzagging carts and long waits at peak hours but dim sum here is worth the light chaos. The signature Peking duck with its crispy lacquered skin and fluffy buns makes for a memorable treat, not unlike the deliciously sweet and salty char siu bao. Dumplings are a true highlight and range from fragrant pork xiao long bao to paper-thin har gow concealing chunks of shrimp.

Dim sum is the perfect brunch option when you’re looking for something that’s not your traditional bacon and eggs situation, but still feels comforting and satisfying. And though Yank Sing is definitely more expensive than other SF dim sum spots, we like it for its elegant and festive mood. Going there feels special and like a real dining occasion.

But they offer a very inspired and exceptional range of meat and seafood dumping options, and their Shanghai soup dumplings (xiao long bao) are considered one of San Francisco’s must-have dishes.

Yank Sing is a bit on the expensive side, but the location, service, and quality of ingredients stack up to the price. They have a diverse menu and this is the best dimsum spot for vegetarians as they have a large variety of vegetable dumplings and side dishes to choose from. They are known for their BBQ pork buns (a Chris Cosentino favorite) and Shanghai dumplings, but my favorite item is the scallop dumplings and I can eat a couple of baskets all by myself!

Yank Sing is a slightly more upscale eatery that lets you feast on the tastiest and freshest dishes in the Cantonese cookbook.

Why we love this place: If you haven’t had dim sum, you haven’t done breakfast in San Francisco. This Yank Sing location, inside a spacious atrium with a bizarre waterfall descending from the glass ceiling, is packed on weekends with big groups of SF locals and their visiting out-of-towners. Sit at a big round table with a lazy Susan, and select from dozens of items as servers wheel them by on carts.

If someone says great dim sum in San Francisco, think Yank Sing. There are two locations, one on Spear Street and another on Stevenson Street. Both are filled with large clothed tables, in a dimly lit large room, with trolleys weaving through tables.

Only five blocks separate the two Yank Sings, and we can’t think of another two-location eatery whose sister restaurants are so close together. But that’s not the only thing that makes Yank Sing an outlier on this list. It is, in a word, expensive.

I like this place better than Yank Sing, except for the Yank Sing crab dumpling. This place is good for seafood stuff, I believe.
