Admire chefs and bakers through the clear glass window at this local bakery, as they prepare scratch-made buttermilk biscuits, granola, and even homemade ricotta. Pop in for grab-and-go pastries and picnic items or stop by during breakfast or lunch to take down the Smoked Pastrami Reuben or Spicy Fried Chicken Sandwich, with sides like Crispy Smashed Fingerling Potatoes. An array of artisan breads are baked daily, such as the Rosemary and Parmesan Levain.

Tucked in the alley between Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co. and The Lark, Helena Avenue Bakery is home to our favorite baked goods in Santa Barbara and a great spot to get some carbs in your stomach before all the tasting rooms open. They have an extended back patio with six or so tables.

So concluded Sherry Villanueva and her team at Acme Hospitality, whose quiver of Funk Zone eateries includes The Lark, Les Marchands, Loquita, Lucky Penny, Helena Street Bakery, and the Santa Barbara Wine Collective. Last fall, they added Tyger Tyger to their celebrated culinary crew, and lines immediately formed out the door for slurps of Northern Thai curried pork noodles, chomps of Vietnamese crêpes, and sweat-inducing bites of “Weeping Brisket” that’s slopped up with sticky coconut rice. Diners can follow up with exotically spiced cones from Monkeyshine Ice Cream or a pull of espresso from the Dart Coffee Co.; all are under the same roof surrounding the pink-lamped, open-windowed dining hall, although the coffee business is independently owned by David Dart and Erika Carter Dart.

Housed in an industrial warehouse building and retrofitted to be hip and trendy the Helena Avenue Bakery is the latest addition to an ongoing stunning change to the Funk Zone, a former unsightly industrial area two blocks from the beach. There are multiple tasting rooms, Figueroa Mountain Brewery, a distillery, art galleries and multiple places for food, like Mexican street food at Money’s, to food trucks to Seven Bar & Kitchen, Lucky Penny and The Lark - these last two owned and operated by Sherry Villanueva, who started the bakery. “Having a bakery was a logical progression for us,” Sherry Villanueva told me when I stopped in.

One morning on our last trip to Santa Barbara when looking for a place to hang out and work aside from our hotel room, I headed to a popular, and “sweet,” spot in the Funk Zone, Helena Avenue Bakery. This local bakery serves seasonal pastries and organic breads made from scratch, as well as breakfast, sandwiches and salads all in a modern, industrial setting. I went for the warm brown butter cinnamon roll, which was so delicious and I can give it a first-hand recommendation, but it’s too much for 1 person, so bring a buddy :)!

Down in the Funk Zone, Helena Avenue Bakery dishes out organic breads made with locally milled flour, seasonal pastries, and made-to-order breakfast and lunch fare. Try simple pleasures like the buttermilk biscuit with salted butter and jam and the wildflower honey ricotta on sourdough toast, or one of the hearty breakfast sandwiches on brioche. Weekends bring out fans of their Challah French toast and sour cherry and pistachio levain, available exclusively on Saturday and Sunday.

If you're on the go, the house picked veggies, marinated olives, and three cheese board with dried fruits and nuts are great for impromptu beach picnics.

There are very good reasons that crowds head to Helena Avenue Bakery for breakfast every weekend. Our breakfasts each morning came from this incredible bakery in Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone. Whether you enjoy a hot meal at the Helena Avenue Bakery or pick up pastries and picnic fixings to go, you really shouldn’t miss this place. We absolutely loved their cinnamon rolls and assorted pastries and I’m eager to go back for green eggs and ham and avocado toast.

on most days, which is late for a bakery, but this is so their employees can stay well-rested and don’t have to bake in the wee hours of the morning. They’re open every day except Sunday, when they’re at the Ojai farmers market, but they have a limited bread menu except on Tuesdays and Saturdays, which is when the Santa Barbara farmers market takes place.

This has become our go to breakfast spot whenever we’re in town. The garden courtyard feel gives this place the perfect Santa Barbara ambiance. It’s also attached to the Santa Barbara Wine Collective.

It shares an open concept space with the Santa Barbara Wine Collective, bakes an awesome rye bread, and is easily my favorite place to grab some coffee in town.
