Reviews Summary
Atrisco Cafe & Bar is praised for its authentic New Mexican cuisine, generous portions, and friendly service, offering great value. While the space can be a bit tight and waits can be long during peak times, the delicious food, especially dishes smothered in red or green chile and the famous sopapillas, makes it a local favorite. Some reviewers noted the service can be minimal, focusing on order-taking, but overall satisfaction with the food quality and affordability remains high.
"Our first time having New Mexican cuisine and liked it! I definitely recommend coming here and trying one of the dishes with chile as that’s what’s typical of this region. I had enchiladas with red chile and loved it. The portions are big, and the service is quick. Plus we got sopapillas with honey provided at the table. Delicious!"

"Recommended by a former colleague for the New Mexican restaurant. Menudo soup was okay, nothing special. The burrito is smothered. We ordered the combination, ground beef and refried beans, though the one with roasted lamb is said to be the house special. We arrived around 2pm and there was still a 30 minute waiting time. So you can tell this place is quite popular. The service is virtually none, taking your order and giving you the check. There was nothing else in between."

"The space is a little tight but it’s a very home type of feel! The wait was a little long but it was understandable why so many people wanted to eat here at the same time as we were here the food was amazing!!! I had the green chile stew, it was delicious and came with a tortilla my family all got stuffed sopapillas one red and one green (pictured below) but everything was great. Our waiter was super polite and helpful I wish I remembered his name."

Restaurants in Santa Fe
Run by the family behind Tia Sophia's and Tomasita's, this casual New Mexican restaurant is where locals go to avoid the crowds at other Downtown eateries. Located inside DeVargas shopping center (just five minutes north of the Plaza), Atrisco offers authentic dishes the way Santa Feans like them—smothered in red or green chile (or both, referred to as "Christmas" style). The stuffed sopaipillas are highly recommended, and the meat loaf with jalapeño mashed potatoes will please the "meat-and-tater" crowd looking for hearty fare at slightly less than Plaza-adjacent prices.
Red or Green-New Mexico's Food Scene Was on Fire in 2019
So it bears mentioning the uber-local green chile cheeseburger at the most charming Atrisco Cafe & Bar, the green chile enchiladas at Horseman’s Haven, spicy green chile cheddar fries at Cowgirl BBQ, on some of the best all-around Mexican dishes in America at La Choza. If Southwestern food isn’t your thing, you’re wrong, but there’s still standout American cuisine at Restaurant Martin and Joseph’s, jerk chicken and goat stew like you wouldn’t believe at Afro-Caribbean go-to Jambo Cafe, and a restaurant with food so fresh, nourishing, and delicious that senior staff writer Lee Breslouer once visited three times in 48 hours: Sweetwater.

You can get the whole-wheat sopaipilla if it makes you feel less guilty.
