What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Chocolate Maven is a highly-regarded bakery and eatery in Santa Fe, praised for its delicious baked goods, especially cakes and pastries, and its hearty brunch options. Diners enjoy the unique experience of watching pastry chefs at work through a glass window. However, some reviews point to inconsistent service and occasional cleanliness concerns in the dining area and restrooms.
"This is a commercial bakery with an embedded restaurant.
Parking is off street, in front of the bakery. You go through the bakery shop to get to the restaurant. There was not wait when we visited on a weekday morning.
We got gluten free blue corn blueberry pancakes with pinions, a side of green chili sausage, and a Mediterranean omelet with smashed breakfast potatoes.
The omelet was very tasty, with a healthy portion of feta and kalamata olives.
The breakfast potatoes, baked then smashed and fried crispy were the star of the show.
The green chili sausage was good but not exceptional.
The blue corn pancakes were tasty, with a reasonable portion of pinions on top. Like many gluten free options, they lacked structural integrity. They were almost as good as the equivalent blue corn pinion pancakes at the Flying Tortilla (which are not gluten free).
There was a window to the commercial bake
ry floor in the dining room where we were seated. We enjoyed watching cinnamon rolls being made during breakfast.
It was a little pricey, $50 breakfast for two, but I felt like I got my money's worth."

"We enjoyed our sandwich and Rosemary fries. The chocolate cake was amazing. The service was not that desirable. We loved watching the pastry Chef get busy from our view."

"The first time we came here it was great, but it has gone downhill every time we've visited after that. The food is alright, same with the service. The drinking glasses and mugs are ALWAYS dirty. They also changed their policy and you have to pay for your pastries separately from your meal check, which is just sort of inconvenient. Also, the burrito did not agree with someone in my party. 😬"

Although the name of this cheery bakery suggests sweets, and it does sweets especially well, Chocolate Maven also produces impressive savory breakfast and lunch fare. Meals are "farmers' market–inspired" and feature seasonal dishes, including wild-mushroom-and-goat-cheese focaccia sandwiches, eggs ménage à trois (one each of eggs Benedict, Florentine, and Madison—the latter consisting of smoked salmon and poached egg), and Caprese salad of fresh mozzarella, basil, and tomatoes. A plus for those looking for healthier fare is the option of various plant-based meat options for breakfast or a lunchtime sandwich.
Santa Fe's Best Weekend Brunches And Late Breakfasts
Lovers of baked goods will find the Chocolate Maven a particularly appealing brunch spot, although the menu hardly stops there. Many a brunch item reflect the Chocolate Maven’s penchant for baked goods, from French toasts prepared with apricot compote and even themed ‘crème brûlée’, to a tantalising spread of pancakes, Belgian waffles, pancakes, crepes and blintzes. Brunch entrées air on the savoury side, with southwest-inspired omelettes, scrambles and eggs Benedict spiced with poblano chiles and accompanied by beans.
Santa Fe this weekend-questions about 10,000 waves , birthday cakes and Halloween.
I don't have streets for either off the top of my head, but you shouldn't have any problem locating them once there.
The Infamous Breakfast Burrito - where to find this specialty in Santa Fe? (Los Alamos: live in, restaurant) - New Mexico (NM) -Santa Fe County
One other place I have eaten at several times but for some reason never had the breakfast burrito (I do love me a good breakfast burrito) is Chocolate Maven, which is off St. Michael's (actually W. San Mateo) near the interchange with St. Francis. You can get the added bonus of seeing the bakers make their other goodies through a window if you are in the downstairs dining room. I don't think they have chorizo, but they do offer a green chile sausage that is quite tasty.
Our Favorite Chocolate Shops in Santa Fe
The Chocolate Maven is located in Santa Fe’s thriving Second Street district, a few miles from the center of town. Not only do they sell delicious chocolate, but they also prepare and sell baked goods and offer breakfast, brunch, and even high tea in their cozy cafe. The Maven has been a Santa Fe staple for decades, with origins over fifty years ago as a tiny Santa Fe pastry shop known for brownies, hot chocolate, and late-night poetry readings.
Best of Santa Fe 2025: Food & Drink
We’ve yet to come across a baked good the Maven can’t deliver upon, and the biscochitos are no exception. The hand-cut cookies are full on cinammony goodness while also delivering that essential hit of anise. It’s everything one expects from a biscochito, and might we suggest you go for the traditional hot chocolate pairing for a true taste of Santa Fe?

We love coming here for brunch to enjoy the view of pastries in progress and the excellent vegan options. Really wish more places would do this, it’s so much appreciated.

The Best Breakfast Burrito in Santa Fe, New Mexico (2024)
Chocolate Maven is an infamous bakery and restaurant in Santa Fe but can also be included for their Breakfast Burrito. I personally haven’t had it yet, but am including it as it’s the priciest Breakfast Burrito option I have seen so far in Santa Fe. If you have had it, please report back to me!

Among the temptations are a Dutch apple pie a la mode which is actually sourced from legendary Santa Fe restaurant-bakery Chocolate Maven. It’s a fantastic apple pie because the apples are allowed to be themselves. That means they’re a bit sour, not overly sweet.
