Its brick and mortar might feel unassuming if you’re just driving by on Cerrillos Road, but plenty of people have sought out The Ranch House for that very reason. BBQ, in our modern world, can easily fall into the realm of pretentiousness—yet not so here. Owned and operated by Josh Baum and Ann Gordon, The Ranch House cultivates a true taste of the American West with Colorado-sourced beef smoked with Texas oak and rubbed with a New Mexico red chile honey glaze.

Stop in for a Blue Mesa Margarita from Tortilla Flats, a Blood Orange Esporita from Rio Chama, and a Pure Gold Margarita from The Ranch House as you work your way through the city’s finest cocktails on the Santa Fe Margarita Trail. Find unique drinks like a Cactus Coke, Myrna Loy, or Bliss Behind Your Eyes at Santa Fe speakeasy Tonic. Enjoy tasty drinks like an Amigo Frances, Sandia Rosalia, or Smoked Sage Margarita at the Secreto Lounge in Hotel St. Francis.

The lower grounds, to the northeast, are called “The Ranch” as homage to the San Juan Ranch, a guest resort housed there for many years. The ten-acre campus of offices, cantina, swimming pool and an enormous sloping lawn with its mountain views is surrounded by numerous rehearsal halls all nestled into a hillside. Benches scattered among gardens, trees and shrubbery invite artists, crew and apprentices to chat, study or merely pause for a few minutes’ rest.

Originally started as an ode to smoked meats, the first iteration of The Ranch House quickly outgrew its small space and expanded into a larger restaurant with top-notch barbecue. It’s a nice spot for everyday dining, and the variety of American cuisine it serves makes it an easy choice for families. The menu is dotted with New Mexican touches, including sides like green chile slaw, refried beans, and calabacitas.

Busy place indicates that guests appreciate the price/value of the Ranch House. Hostess seated us promptly and Peggy was very friendly and took our order after explaining the gluten free options for my husband. We had happy hour prices (until 6pm) on our drinks and my husband had the brisket plate w three gluten free sides: potato salad, coleslaw, beans (no chili cornbread).

Some know it as a great BBQ joint, and it certainly is, but you can also enjoy a daily Happy Hour from 3 to 6 pm. The family-friendly atmosphere at The Ranch House welcomes all on the burgeoning Southside of Santa Fe. Take advantage of the fun bar setting, complete with large televisions or pick a spot on the patio.

Generous portions, reasonable prices and an endless amount of barbecue food. That's what The Ranch House is all about and known for. The restaurant promises and most certainly delivers the quality that is expected by its visitors with dishes such as traditional barbecue baby back ribs and house smoked wings.

We stopped by The Ranch House on the way back to Albuquerque. Much of their menu is gluten free, and they were even able to accommodate a couple of my requests to make my meal just perfect.

The Ranch House is a go-to spot for barbecue lovers, offering generous portions at reasonable prices. Their traditional barbecue baby back ribs and house-smoked wings are crowd-pleasers.
