Reviews Summary

Cobi's is lauded for its exceptionally delicious Southeast Asian cuisine and charming, vintage ambiance that creates a unique dining experience. Reviewers frequently praise standout dishes like the butter chicken and beef rendang, as well as the romantic garden patio. However, some diners have noted inconsistent service pacing and an instance of disrespectful staff interaction, which detracted from an otherwise positive meal.

"Such a great Southeast Asian restaurant with romantic, vintage, and elegant décor that feels both comfortable and relaxing. I ordered the Chicken Satay, Scotch Egg, Nasi Goreng Pork, and Rendang Roti Wraps, each dish was flavorful, delicious, and well above average. Overall, the vibe, food, and atmosphere were all fantastic. A must-visit if you’re in the area."

"I’m honestly not sure how to rate this place — I came for the food (which, minus the dessert, was great), but the service really threw me off, especially for a Bib Gourmand spot.

To start with the positives: the food was genuinely delicious, which I guess should be expected from a place with this kind of recognition. The only thing I didn’t enjoy was the dessert — more on that later.

When we sat down, it took quite a while for anyone to come over. Eventually a server did, and he was friendly and helpful with explaining the menu, which I appreciated. But the pacing of the meal was odd — our appetizers came out super fast (like, too fast), and then we waited a long time for the mains. Would’ve been nicer if things had been spaced out a bit more.

What really bothered me, though, was an interaction I had with someone from the support staff. I asked politely for a clean plate, and he yelled at me saying the one I had was clean and didn’t need changing. I’ve never had that happen in any restaurant before, and it honestly just ruined the vibe.

To top it off, I went with the Thai Tea Pudding based on the server’s recommendation, and… big miss. Didn’t enjoy it at all.

So overall: amazing food (again, minus dessert), but the service and tone of the experience left a lot to be desired. I’d consider coming back for the food alone, but I hope the service becomes more consistent — and respectful — in the future."

"Had a fantastic dinner at Cobi's. We did the tasting menu and every single dish was amazing. Fresh and unique flavors, everything came out piping hot. Our server was great and it was such a cool vibe inside the restaurant. I would definitely go back."

Best new restaurants in Los Angeles

Transport yourself to Southeast Asia at this spot just a block from the beach in Santa Monica, with dishes like curry puffs, flaky roti and dry-aged branzino with yellow curry, mint, cilantro and Thai basil, all arriving on vintage plates. Add a heaping portion of nasi goreng – flavor-bursting Indonesian-style fried rice with shrimp or pork belly – and round out your meal with a soft-serve sundae tower with brownie bites, peanuts and caramel or Thai tea pudding with flavored boba. It all comes courtesy of Indonesian-raised Australian chef Cobi Marsh of Cobi’s Curries, who was handed the foodie torch from the restaurant's previous, five-decade-long owners.

Where To Eat Outdoor Brunch In LA - Los Angeles

The lush garden patio at Cobi’s is one of our favorite places to eat outside on the Westside, and it might look even better at daytime, when the plants and plant sculptures really pop in the sunlight (although the probability of sitting next to French tourists goes up, too). Cobi's brunch menu is similar to what they serve at dinner, with the addition of dishes like Vietnamese-style scotch eggs, Hainanese rice congee, and habanero-brined fried chicken, which are good but didn't blow us away. Luckily the dinner dishes are still fantastic.

Must-try new restaurants and pop-ups in Los Angeles

Offering Southeast Asian dishes in an idyllic garden setting where roses, eucalyptus and ivy dangle from the ceiling and march across floral wallpaper, with climbing vines and bougainvillea on the patio, Cobi’s has been a neighborhood favorite since it opened in Santa Monica in 2020. It’s likely to get a lot busier now that it’s been added to the 2023 Michelin Guide of Bib Gourmand restaurants in California that offer high-quality food at a great value. Stop by for brunch to enjoy chicken or mushroom satay, roti wraps and Kaya French toast with a pink guava frosé or Carbonic sangria, or for dinner with wok-tossed vegetables, curries and wood-grilled items, with plenty of natural wines for pairing.
