Transport yourself to Southeast Asia at this spot just a block from the beach in Santa Monica, with dishes like curry puffs, flaky roti and dry-aged branzino with yellow curry, mint, cilantro and Thai basil, all arriving on vintage plates. Add a heaping portion of nasi goreng – flavor-bursting Indonesian-style fried rice with shrimp or pork belly – and round out your meal with a soft-serve sundae tower with brownie bites, peanuts and caramel or Thai tea pudding with flavored boba. It all comes courtesy of Indonesian-raised Australian chef Cobi Marsh of Cobi’s Curries, who was handed the foodie torch from the restaurant's previous, five-decade-long owners.

The lush garden patio at Cobi’s is one of our favorite places to eat outside on the Westside, and it might look even better at daytime, when the plants and plant sculptures really pop in the sunlight (although the probability of sitting next to French tourists goes up, too). Cobi's brunch menu is similar to what they serve at dinner, with the addition of dishes like Vietnamese-style scotch eggs, Hainanese rice congee, and habanero-brined fried chicken, which are good but didn't blow us away. Luckily the dinner dishes are still fantastic.

Located off Main Street, Cobi’s offers pan-Southeast Asian cuisine and natural wines in a cozy neighborhood setting. The grandma-chic indoor dining room floral wallpaper and antique furniture, and the lush outdoor patio incorporates plenty of greenery and vintage lampshades. The all-around excellent Southeast Asian-inspired dishes sets the restaurant apart by far—a characterization that extends to weekend brunch, when kaya French toast and chicken rice porridge take the place of eggs Benedict and build-your-own omelets.

Offering Southeast Asian dishes in an idyllic garden setting where roses, eucalyptus and ivy dangle from the ceiling and march across floral wallpaper, with climbing vines and bougainvillea on the patio, Cobi’s has been a neighborhood favorite since it opened in Santa Monica in 2020. It’s likely to get a lot busier now that it’s been added to the 2023 Michelin Guide of Bib Gourmand restaurants in California that offer high-quality food at a great value. Stop by for brunch to enjoy chicken or mushroom satay, roti wraps and Kaya French toast with a pink guava frosé or Carbonic sangria, or for dinner with wok-tossed vegetables, curries and wood-grilled items, with plenty of natural wines for pairing.

Let’s start with the entryway and dozens of long stem roses hanging from the ceiling—and this is not just for Valentine’s Day but a signature design feature. Try to book the back patio where you will dive into sharable plates of Indonesian snacks, ranging from Curry Puffs with garam masala to a spread of gado gado with tempeh, peanut satay and cassava crackers washed down with natural wines and Asian lagers. For dessert, a shaved ice with berry granita and coconut tofu cream hits the spot.

Cobi's is a living celebration of Asian street food — Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Indian, and much more!. This spot has a particular talent for infusing traditional American breakfast meals with the tastes of asian cuisine. The BLT Banh Mi for example, which is featured on their brunch menu, takes a traditional American meal (BLT), and stuffs it with crispy pork belly, sambal aioli, bibb lettuce, tomato, all rested in a french Baguette, and topped with a fried egg.

Between its feminine, floral decor and South Asian fusion menu, it’s no wonder why Cobi’s has become one of the coolest restaurants in Ocean Park. Whether you’re visiting for brunch or dinner, kick your meal off with the refreshing and light lychee blossom cocktail. For food, the pork dumplings are a flavorful appetizer that can easily be shared, while the butter chicken and wood-grilled beef short rib should be top contenders for your main course.

One of the best Indian/Southeast Asian restaurants in Santa Monica, and actually one of the most charming, is Cobi’s. For years I passed by this small pink building on Main Street oblivious to what a great date spot this was. The inside and patio dining areas are fantastic for a date; the sidewalk tables, not so much though.
