Next to Ghisallo, this Ocean Park storefront is helping meet the city’s overflowing demand for Montreal-style bagels. Though lines are, for now, nowhere as long as the more eastward Courage Bagels, those hoping for a taste of Layla’s delicious open-face creations should arrive early and anticipate at least a half-hour wait to order. Once at the counter, you’ll find a mix of savory and sweet options like the must-order Pre-Jam (seasonal fruit, cream cheese and honey), plus specialy coffee and matcha drinks.

Verdict: The Courage Bagels of the Westside (with way shorter lines). This Santa Monica bakery specializes in tangy sourdough bagels that crunch and smush like the best of 'em. Toppings range from classics (cream cheese, tomatoes, herbs, smoked fish, pickled onions, you name it) to less typical stuff (lemon zest, chili flakes, PB&J, avocado, hummus).

While we never needed a reminder, it seems like the rest of the country has finally gotten on board with the idea that LA's bagel scene is top-tier. While we'll always have our Western Bagels, our Bagel Brokers, and our Sams,' there are a new crop of bagel shops that are redefining the texture, toppings, and, yes, even shape, of our favorite carb rings. Layla is the latest to join the West Coast new wave sourdough bagel movement, and we're already smitten.

The one-block section of Ocean Park Avenue between 16th and 17th Streets behind John Adams Middle school is a charming oasis in Santa Monica, more like Silverlake in character. On a weekend morning, you’ll find a line of young adults stretched around the block. They’re waiting for bagels at Layla Bagels.

Layla Bagels is another of the city’s most popular daytime spots, serving up delicious sourdough bagels stacked with the freshest ingredients ranging from smoked salmon and tuna salad to avocado and heirloom tomatoes.
