What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mélisse offers an intimate fine-dining experience with exquisite French-inspired tasting menus that highlight seasonal ingredients. Diners consistently praise the attentive and excellent service, making special occasions memorable. While some find the portions small and prices high, many feel the quality of the food and elevated service justify the cost.
"Melisse is an intimate fine-dining restaurant located within Citrin restaurant. The 14 seat dining room is intimate and comfortable and the team services up sophisticated French-inspired dishes. The multi-course tasting menu places an emphasis on seasonal ingredients and refined culinary techniques and dishes are delicate and refreshing. Favorites include the signature "golden chicken" and Hokkaido scallops.
Service here is extremely attentive and friendly and staff frequently check-in to address any needs. It was also a treat to see Joshua himself come by the table to introduce himself.
Reservations are highly recommended as seating is limited. Note that while the cost is on the higher side of tasting experiences ($399/person), both the quality of the cooking and the elevated service justifies the premium.
A special gem to visit if in the Santa Monica area!"

"One of the most disappointing Michelin dining experiences I’ve had worldwide.
After booking a month in advance, the restaurant canceled my reservation without consent but still charged the full amount. Communication was poor throughout.
The dining space was cramped, poorly lit with harsh white lighting, and the decor felt cheap — far below Michelin standards. One course was even served with mismatched, stained chopsticks.
Food was equally disappointing: nearly every dish featured overpowering sour foam, masking the ingredients’ flavors. Even after requesting adjustments, the taste remained unpleasant.
The only enjoyable part was the fresh fruit and the birthday cake I brought myself.Melisse does not live up to its two-star rating."

"I have eaten at Melisse twice and both times were absolutely incredible. The staff are fabulous and attentive from the time of setting up the evening through the end of the meal. They are willing to make the evening special and attend to any needs you may have.
The food is superb: flawless execution and well balanced flavors. Every bite is meticulously planned and explained by the staff.
I even noted to my guest that I’m often disappointed in desserts at high-end restaurants in comparison to the savory courses, but that was not the case at Melisse. Here, the dessert delivers on the same level as the savory courses as an equal: elevated and elegant without being so overly complex or reaching to lose the sweet punch expected in a dessert.
The finishing touch of the night was being sent away with a copy of the menu as you specifically experienced it (down to the supplements you selected) for both food and wine complete with the date you dined in an elegant envelope as a keepsake. I have dined at many 3-Star restaurants, and very few have done this: I love that Melisse includes this as a part of its standard practice; it’s a very special touch."

All 24 Michelin Star Restaurants in Los Angeles, Updated for 2024
Over a decade after its first starred recognition by the guide, Josiah Citrin’s Santa Monica fine dining stalwart is back to two-star status after being rebuffed in 2019 and undergoing a pre-pandemic pivot away from an ultra-formal white tablecloth experience. Now seating only 14 diners at a time in a hidden alcove within the more casual (but still upscale) Citrin, Mélisse continues to deliver one of the city’s best—and most expensive— tasting menus ($400), with luxurious, detail-oriented dishes like caviar in chawanmushi topped with imported Hokkaido uni and a rich chestnut soup with even more decadent truffle foam.

Being at Melisse feels like you’re eating at a restaurant in Paris in the 1920s, except instead of authors and surrealists, you’re surrounded by studio executives and Instagram models who are about to get proposed to. The space is all white tablecloths and heavy chairs, where you sit and enjoy an expensive prix fixe French menu. The food comes in ridiculously small portions, but the good news is it’s all really excellent and unlike any French food you’ve had before.

It's a gem tucked within a treasure box: hidden within Citrin, a one-Michelin-star restaurant, is Mélisse, a two-Michelin-star restaurant. Chef-owner Josiah Citrin entrusts chef de cuisine Ian Scaramuzza to blend his modern French cooking with seasonal California produce at this Santa Monica institution. hotel & restaurant fun in Santa Monica CA?
Stylish restaurants in the area include Jiraffe, Melisse and Chinois on Main. I can't describe any as pretentious, although some of the patrons can be. The staff in each are not arrogant, which is always a plus in my book, and most of these places politely get the annoying cell phone in a restaurant users to can it.

Los Angeles French Food Restaurants: 10Best Restaurant Reviews
Ever since M—lisse opened its doors in 1999, Chef-Owner Josiah Citrin has pushed for excellence in every element of this fine-dining experience —" and has succeeded admirably. His restaurant is the kind of place where patrons dress for dinner, the silver is real and every dish is precisely made to the exacting standards of French haute cuisine. Constantly showered with accolades, M—lisse led the way toward seasonal menus sourced via local farmer's markets (Citrin is a fixture at the famed Santa Monica market) and continues to innovate. The chef makes the menu choice during this eight-course meal, so hope that the legendary Dover sole made tableside or the Cote de Boeuf Roti are on the menu. If not, rest assured that every bite will be memorable. Make sure to add wine to your meal, as Mélisse has one of the best cellars in the city. Recommended for French because: One of the few two-starred Michelin restaurants in L.A. (as of 2021), this Santa Monica star is the place in L.A.

Chef Josiah Citrin's flagship celebrates a certain kind of fine dining experience that will never go out of style. Slip in through a discreet side entrance to enter the enclosed space within Citrin, a private room that combines a vibe-y underground feel with classic luxury. The kitchen employs bold flavors and decadent sauces, blending French traditions with a bit of contemporary whimsy. The results are both eye-catching and indulgent, from intricate canapés to a knockout dish of duck “Rouennaise,” featuring a decadent sauce made with the help of an antique silver press; on the side, “ducks in a duvet” is a swanky take on pigs in a blanket. Service is engaging and full of charm, down to a wine program offering surprising rarities at a reasonable expense." - Michelin
